The Story of John Palmer, Army Veteran
Growing up, I knew I wanted to serve my country. When I was in basic training, my brother was already serving in Vietnam. I remember thinking, "This is something I need to do." So, I got physical, went through the process, and was approved to stay in the Army. My time in the military was some of the most challenging and rewarding years of my life. I went to Fort Leonard Wood for basic training and was later assigned to a nuclear missile base in Davie. I even got to transfer to Wilmington, Ohio, which was a great experience. Every day, we'd have PT and learn how to be stealthy in the field. We'd get up at 4 AM for KP duty, but it was worth it. I became a corporal and took pride in my work. One of my biggest accomplishments was passing the rifle test. It wasn't easy, but it's a crucial skill for any soldier. I also learned a lot about responsibility and taking life seriously. When you're working with nuclear missiles, you have to be focused and precise. After basic, I was tasked with operating radars on a 24-hour clock. I did very well on the test, which is why I was able to take on this critical role. My captain was impressed, and it was a great feeling to know that I was contributing to the safety of our country. When I got out of the Army, I came home to Nebraska and started working at a bicycle shop. It was a different kind of challenge, but I was determined to be good at it. The military taught me a lot about respect, hard work, and responsibility. Looking back, I'm proud of what I accomplished. I had some great leaders and mentors who guided me along the way. Unfortunately, some of my fellow soldiers didn't make it home. We keep them in our thoughts and prayers. I'm grateful for my time in the military and the lessons I learned. It shaped me into the person I am today, and I'm proud to have served.
Thank you, John, for your service!❤️
