Dear Baby,
Nearly two years ago, I had the honor of cutting your brother’s cord while your parents cheered me on and today, I got to do the same for you, his sweet new sister. You may have decided to come a bit early, friend, but it will sure be a more joyous holiday season now that you have joined your family.

Dear Baby,
Sometimes a doula goes to meet a client for the very first time as it’s time for Baby to arrive. I adored your parents from the start and it was an honor to watch them welcome you into their beautiful family. I’m sorry wasn’t there, but I’m so glad that I got to be.

Dear Baby,
While I couldn’t see you be born yesterday because of doula restrictions in the OR, it was my absolute honor to soothe you today and help your mommy for a few hours while your daddy went home to visit your sister. To watch a little family evolve and learn how to accommodate a new member is always an honor.

Dear Baby,
Your mommy and daddy were expecting an early Christmas present but you surprised us all by arriving in time for turkey! I know without a doubt that you are what your entire family is most thankful for this year.

The last bag. Today, my almost 14-month-old consumed the last of my breastmilk from this journey with her. She weaned on her own shortly after her first birthday and I’ve given her a bag each day from my remaining freezer stash since then. The end of this saga is bittersweet, but I’m grateful for what we accomplished together, her and I, and for the extra 200oz or so that I was able to donate to others. We worked hard to make this happen and I’m proud of us. 💙💙

Dear Baby,
In the moment before you were born, your dad exclaimed “oh wow!” and I think that about sums it up. Way to go, Little One, what a perfect entrance.

I couldn’t let the week pass without acknowledging Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day. Eight years ago this week, I had my first of two miscarriages. And while I have been so blessed to carry three healthy babies here and to still have them with me today, those losses will be a forever hurt. So to all the babies who never made it here or were called away far too soon, we remember you. And to the parents with empty arms, we hold you and lift you up. 💙

My baby is one today so I thought I’d finally share her birth story here…it’s one of my favorite memories ever and I’m so grateful to everyone who supported me that day.

On September 17, 2024, I was 38 weeks and 5 days pregnant with my third baby. My previous two babies came after their due date so I had scheduled an elective induction on Thursday, which I had meticulously planned and was excited about. But on Tuesday, around 2am, I became aware something kept waking me up. I got up to use the bathroom and realized I was definitely having contractions! After not being able to fall back asleep, I downloaded a timer and wouldn’t you know, they were already 2-3 minutes apart. Things escalated rather rapidly from there and I soon woke my husband and my mom and let our doula know. By 4:07am, I was in a triage room, as you can see in the picture, grinning like a fool because I was so excited labor had started on its own before my induction and so shocked we were going to meet our baby today. I was 5cm dilated and definitely in active labor! They got me hooked up to an IV and antibiotics because I was GBS positive and by 5am I was in my room and had calmly decided I would like an epidural. I was having so much FUN and was so happy, I wanted to hold on to that feeling and be fully present for the rest of this delivery! Continued in comments!

Dear Baby,
There was a moment in the most intense part of labor when your dad started reading out loud the affirmations your mom had written on a piece of paper to give her strength and guidance. To hear him speak her inner words back to her was more powerful than I can say.

Dear Baby,
A roller coaster of a birth means a blurry photo at the end of the night. Nothing about your entrance into this world looked quite how your parents imagined it, but the “after” - those moments when you latched and your mother held you and everyone cried tears of joy and relief and every emotion you can imagine - that looked absolutely perfect.
