I always thought the umbilical cord was just a simple tube — a lifeline that fed the baby inside the womb. But it’s so much more than that.
Inside this slender cord are two arteries and one vein, each playing a critical role in sustaining life before birth. The vein carries oxygen-rich, nutrient-packed blood straight to the baby, while the arteries carry away deoxygenated blood, waste products, and nutrient-depleted blood back to the placenta, where it’s replenished.
Every thread, every pulse, every drop of blood is part of a delicate, complex system that keeps life alive. It’s why doctors wait about three minutes before cutting the cord — giving the placenta time to return its full complement of blood, completing the life-giving process.
The umbilical cord isn’t just a connection. It’s a masterpiece of biology — a reminder that life, even before birth, is intricately detailed, purposeful, and miraculous.
