Neuromuscular conditions affect the nerves that control voluntary muscles, resulting in symptoms such as muscle weakness, fatigue, cramps, numbness, or difficulty with movement and daily activities. Conditions like , myopathy, , , and muscular dystrophy require expert evaluation and ongoing management.

At , our experienced neurologists specialize in diagnosing and treating a wide range of . We offer advanced diagnostic testing, including EMG and nerve conduction studies, and create personalized treatment plans focused on improving strength, function, and quality of life.

A new study has revealed that one in two people (180 million+ people) in the United States is affected by a neurological disease or disorder. These conditions represent the leading cause of decreased well-being and quality of life.

The most common conditions are:
- Tension-type headache
- Migraine
- Diabetic neuropathy

The study measured โ€œdisability-adjusted life-years,โ€ which combine years lost to early death and years lived with disability. Conditions with the greatest collective health loss are:

- Stroke
- Alzheimerโ€™s disease and other dementias
- Diabetic neuropathy
- Migraine

These numbers represent real people whose lives can be improved through prevention, early detection, and easier access to the care they need.

The exact cause of RLS is not fully understood, but neurologists believe that several factors may contribute to its development:
1. ๐——๐—ผ๐—ฝ๐—ฎ๐—บ๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ฒ ๐—œ๐—บ๐—ฏ๐—ฎ๐—น๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฐ๐—ฒ โ€“ The brainโ€™s dopamine pathways play an important role in controlling movement. Disruption in this system may contribute to the symptoms of RLS, especially worsening at night, when dopamine levels naturally decline.
2. ๐—š๐—ฒ๐—ป๐—ฒ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ฐ๐˜€ โ€“ Up to 50% of people with RLS have a family history of the condition. Genetic forms of RLS often begin before age 40 and progress slowly.
3. ๐—œ๐—ฟ๐—ผ๐—ป ๐——๐—ฒ๐—ณ๐—ถ๐—ฐ๐—ถ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐—ฐ๐˜† โ€“ Low iron levels in the brain may disrupt dopamine production. Even when blood levels appear normal, brain iron stores may be low in individuals with RLS.
RLS is more common in people with:
โ€ข Diabetes
โ€ข Kidney disease
โ€ข Peripheral neuropathy
โ€ข Parkinsonโ€™s disease
โ€ข Multiple sclerosis
These conditions may affect nerve function, contributing to RLS symptoms.
5. ๐— ๐—ฒ๐—ฑ๐—ถ๐—ฐ๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—ป๐˜€ โ€“ Certain medications, such as some antihistamines, antidepressants, and antipsychotics, can worsen RLS symptoms.
6. ๐—ฃ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—ด๐—ป๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฐ๐˜† โ€“ Pregnant women often experience temporary RLS due to hormonal and iron level changes. Symptoms typically resolve after delivery.

What Is Restless Leg Syndrome?
Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS) is a neurological sensory condition that is classified as both a movement disorder and a sleep disorder. It is considered a movement disorder because symptoms improve with movement, such as walking or stretching. At the same time, it is recognized as a sleep disorder due to the way symptoms worsen at night and interfere with the ability to fall asleep or stay asleep.

Individuals with RLS often describe uncomfortable sensations such as tingling, throbbing, pulling, crawling, or aching deep within the legs. These sensations typically intensify during periods of rest or inactivity and become most noticeable in the evening or at bedtime. Because of this, RLS can significantly disrupt sleep and overall nighttime comfort. While the legs are most affected, RLS can also occur in the arms or other parts of the body in some cases.

People blink less when working harder to understand speech in noisy environments, suggesting that blinking is tightly linked to cognitive effort. Across two experiments, blink rates consistently dropped during key moments of listening, especially when background noise made speech difficult to process.

Creativity Key to Slowing Brain Aging

New brain imaging research shows that people who regularly engage in creative activities tend to have โ€œyoungerโ€ brains than their chronological age would predict.

This effect was seen across many forms of creativity, including dance, music, visual art, and even strategy-based video games.

Creative engagement was linked to stronger brain network efficiency, greater plasticity, and better preservation of regions vulnerable to aging.

Even short-term training produced measurable benefits, while long-term creative experience showed the strongest protective effects.
