AML was honored to be included to Keith Bradsher’s reporting overnight in the The New York Times, detailing the suspension of Chinese export controls on various critical minerals.

In the 1990s, Chinese Premiere Deng Xiaoping declared: "The Middle East has oil, and China has rare earths." Fast forward to today—30 years later—and China controls the permanent magnet supply chain that powers U.S. military might, critical infrastructure, and so much of daily life.

But it was not always this way. In the 1980s, American researchers invented practical methods for producing neodymium permanent magnets, leading to Magnequench in Indiana and the pioneering of permanent magnet technology and manufacturing.

The lesson? Innovation without strategic, all-of-government industrial policy leads to offshoring and dependence.
America can ill afford to wait longer.

A new op-ed in Newsweek walks through an America First approach to permanent magnet manufacturing that combines innovation, technology, and American companies to outmaneuver China. The stakes are too high to wait.

The U.S. government must pursue an innovative, dynamic approach to reestablish permanent magnet manufacturing before geopolitical tensions lead to a point of no return for American industry and national security.
