Online vision apps can sometimes estimate how clearly you see letters on a screen, but comprehensive eye care goes far beyond a simple vision check. During a full eye exam, an optometrist evaluates the overall health of your eyes, including structures you can’t assess with a phone or computer.

A comprehensive exam can help detect or monitor things like:
• Changes in the retina and optic nerve
• Early signs of glaucoma or macular disease
• Indicators of systemic health conditions such as diabetes or high blood pressure
• Subtle vision changes that affect comfort, focus, and daily performance

Technology can be convenient, but it cannot replace a thorough clinical evaluation and the expertise of a trained eye care professional.

Your eye health deserves more than a quick screen test.

Your eyes can reveal more than changes in vision.

During a comprehensive eye exam, doctors can sometimes detect signs of broader health conditions by examining the structures of the eye. Blood vessels, nerves, and retinal tissue can reflect changes happening elsewhere in the body.

In some cases, eye exams may help identify indicators associated with:
• Diabetes
• High blood pressure
• Thyroid-related eye changes
• Neurological conditions

This is one reason routine eye care plays an important role in overall health, not just vision.

Your retina is responsible for some of the most important work your eyes do, even though you never see it happening.

This delicate layer of tissue at the back of the eye converts light into electrical signals that are sent to the brain, allowing you to recognize faces, read text, detect motion, and interpret the world around you.

Because the retina plays such a critical role in vision, protecting its health is essential. Modern diagnostic imaging allows us to evaluate retinal structures in remarkable detail and detect changes that may not yet affect how you see.

Understanding how your eyes function is an important part of protecting long-term vision.

On International Women’s Day, we’re highlighting an important fact: women face a higher risk for several eye conditions, including dry eye and glaucoma.

Vision does more than help you see clearly, it helps you respond quickly.
When your eyes take in information, your brain processes it and sends signals that guide how you move and react. That process affects everyday activities like:
• Driving and responding to sudden changes in traffic
• Tracking a ball or movement during sports
• Working efficiently on screens or detailed tasks
• Maintaining balance and spatial awareness
Clear, well-functioning vision supports faster visual processing and more confident decision-making throughout the day.
Comprehensive eye exams help ensure your vision is supporting the way you live, work, and move.

Ever notice that driving at night feels more challenging than it used to?
In low light, your pupils dilate to allow more light in. While helpful, this naturally reduces depth of focus and can make vision feel softer.
At the same time, contrast sensitivity decreases, which is why headlights appear brighter, signs are harder to read, and glare feels stronger.
Some changes are part of normal visual physiology. Others, such as increasing halos or significant night-driving difficulty, may signal cataracts, dry eye, or other treatable conditions.
If you’ve been avoiding driving after dark, it may be worth a conversation.

Do oncoming headlights feel brighter than they used to?
Are you avoiding night driving more often?
Increased glare, halos around lights, and reduced contrast sensitivity can be linked to normal aging but they can also signal cataracts, dry eye, or other changes that deserve evaluation.

You don’t have to simply “adjust” to discomfort.
A comprehensive eye exam can determine what’s behind the change and what options may help.

Sometimes vision changes don’t feel dramatic, they show up as small adjustments.

Holding menus farther away. Squinting at your phone. Avoiding night driving. Rubbing tired eyes at the end of the day.
These subtle shifts are worth paying attention to.

Routine eye exams help identify whether those changes are simple prescription updates or early signs of something that needs monitoring.
Noticing is the first step.
