Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy for Osteoradionecrosis of the Jaw (ORN)

Osteoradionecrosis (ORN) of the jaw is a serious condition that can occur after radiation therapy for head and neck cancers. Radiation can damage blood vessels in the jawbone, reducing oxygen and blood supply to the tissue. Over time, this can lead to bone that struggles to heal, becomes exposed, or begins to break down.

At BRHC, Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) is used as part of the treatment approach for osteoradionecrosis.

During hyperbaric therapy, patients breathe 100% oxygen inside a pressurized chamber. The increased pressure allows oxygen to dissolve more effectively into the bloodstream and reach areas with poor circulation.

For patients with ORN, hyperbaric oxygen can help:
• Increase oxygen delivery to damaged jawbone
• Stimulate the growth of new blood vessels
• Support bone and soft-tissue healing
• Reduce infection risk
• Improve recovery before or after oral surgery

Many patients undergo a series of treatments to help the body rebuild healthier tissue and restore blood supply to the affected area.

🎥 In this video, we show what a hyperbaric treatment session looks like and how this therapy supports healing for patients dealing with osteoradionecrosis of the jaw.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is one of the important tools used to help patients recover and improve quality of life after radiation-related jaw damage.

🔬 Technology Thursday | Bravard Regional Hyperbaric Center

At Bravard Regional Hyperbaric Center, we use advanced imaging technology like Snapshot to take a deeper look at what’s happening inside a wound.
Snapshot allows our clinical team to quickly analyze tissue oxygenation, blood supply, and potential areas of infection.

By capturing this detailed clinical data, we can better understand how a wound is responding and where additional support is needed.

This information helps us design a personalized treatment strategy, combining hyperbaric oxygen therapy, infection control, and advanced wound care technologies to promote faster and more complete healing.

Technology like this allows us to move beyond simply treating a wound — we are able to analyze, monitor, and adapt treatment plans in real time to give every patient the best chance at recovery.
It’s just one of the many innovative tools we use to support dynamic, data-driven wound care and hyperbaric therapy.
