DWINDLING AWAY AT HOME - A REAL CLIENT CASE STUDY

POWER OF ATTORNEY - MYTH BUSTER
POA is a legal support for folks to designate trusted persons to represent their desires ONLY in the event they cannot physically/mentally do so themselves. They are designed for end-of-life fulfillment of a person's wishes. Those who've lost a loved one from COVID were asked about comfort care. BEHAVIOR CHALLENGES
Behavior changes over time as dementia progresses and affects how a person acts. These may include:
• Getting upset, worried, and angry
• Losing interest in personal care
• Hiding things or believing other people are taking things
• Wandering, pacing or repeating themselves often

Here are some ways to cope with changes in personality and behavior:
• Keep things simple; ask or say one thing at a time
• Have a daily routine; provide water, snacks and bathroom breaks
• Use distractions to reduce escalating behaviors
• Reassure them that they are safe and you are there to help

BEHAVIOR CHALLENGES
Communication can become challenging throughout the course of dementia. You'll need to adjust. These suggestions to try:
• Make eye contact and call the person by name.
• Be aware of your tone and your body language.
• Show a warm, loving, matter-of-fact manner.
• Be open to the person’s concerns, even if it's hard to understand.
• Be patient with angry outbursts; remember, it’s the illness “talking.”
• Simplify instructions, repeat and be patient to allow time for response.
• Use statements and limit options for them to choose.

Mainly, show love and kindness when speaking to your loved one; they need your reassurance.

SOCIAL ENGAGEMENT
Oh my! We have been socially isolated for toooooo long! It has taken a serious toll on the stability for many folks. Safely returning to gathering is so very important as we are designed for fellowship. Community living affords convenient ways to be together during meals and activities. Reaching out to your neighborhood friends, getting out for walks, and dining out are also good ways to be social. Through this pandemic, many have realized the value of quality time with family and friends. Let's be intentional with socializing - it's amazing for our health!

WHAT IS YOUNGER-ONSET ALZHEIMER'S?
Younger-Onset Alzheimer's, also known as Early-Onset Alzheimer's, occurs when a person is younger age 65 when their symptoms begin. Many times folks do not realize what is happening, but many may retire early due to the brain effort it takes to perform their job, increasing errors due to forgetfulness, safety concerns, etc. Sometimes the diagnosis follows a few years later when symptoms are more pronounced.
