Looking for a way to connect with family and friends despite social distancing? Schedule a family dinner video call!

Make a menu that everyone can recreate at home ahead of time (or at least a common appetizer), then tune in to enjoy one another’s company.

Although it might sound a little old school, pulling out a board game (or video game) and asking the whole family to join in for an hour or so is a really fun way to bond and build connections. To incentivize participation, whip up a yummy snack for everyone.

If you’re feeling up for it, get a virtual game of family feud going with extended family and friends!

Having a hard time peeling your child away from their phone?

Try making dinnertime a “no-phone zone” and only allow phone usage when it pertains to the conversation, like fact-checking or sharing a funny video or photo.

With individual schedules and smartphones full of distractions, it can be hard to spend time as a family regularly.

Here’s a simple routine you might want to consider the following:

- 15 minutes together before bedtime to share a cup of tea, a few minutes of a TV show, or have an evening snack.

- Once-a-month outings for the entire family like a hike, bike ride, or a socially-distanced dinner with family friends or extended family.

- Scheduled in one-on-one time between each child and parent a certain day each week.

- Weekly date night between partners.

What do you do to create family time?

Provide resources for your children to express their creativity. Whether it’s a pad of paper and some crayons, a basket of toys, or a trunk full of old clothes for dressing up in, providing kids with unstructured, imaginative play is super important for building creativity and open-mindedness.

Tip: Schedule regular time for your child to “work” on their projects — like when YOU’RE busy working on your work!

Regardless of age, there are plenty of tasks that can be done in the kitchen. Whether it’s adding in an ingredient, stirring, tossing, chopping, peeling, or rinsing, there’s plenty of ways to encourage your kids to be helpers in the kitchen.

Once they get old enough, challenge them to create their own dish to contribute to family dinner, like a salad, baked potatoes, or a pan of brownies.

Build your child’s listening skills by quizzing them after watching a movie or reading a story together. To encourage empathy, focus specifically on how characters must have felt in response to harrowing situations and inquire how your child might have felt had they been in their shoes.
