🚫 Do you really need to rent a Medela Symphony?
Let’s break it down, because in years past (like 6+ years ago), the answer was POSSIBLY. But in 2025? You do not need to lug that giant suitcase of a pump home (and pay $$ for it).
The real reason many people used to rent the Symphony was because:
-We didn’t realize fl**ge sizing was a thing (hint: it is 🔍)
-We lacked education in optimizing pumping
-Most consumer pumps couldn’t fully support supply needs
-NICU/early delivery = automatic rental recommendation
But things have changed. 🙌🏼
We now have powerful, customizable pumps that are actually affordable and often covered by insurance, like the Spectra, Motif, and Unimom Opera. Pumps that work even for NICU and preemie families.
So before you run to rent:
✅ Confirm your pump is a solid choice
✅ Get fl**ge sized by a lactation provider
✅ Assess for any underlying factors impacting supply or output concerns
⚠️ Reminder: “Hospital grade” is NOT a regulated term.
Just because it says so, doesn’t mean it’s magic.
We still respect the Symphony,it was a workhorse in its prime! BUT it is not something we ever find ourselves telling a parent they NEED to make a difference in what they have going on. Usually there’s underlying factors OR issues that can be fixed with sizing and optimizing their pumping routine.
Moral of the story?
Meet with someone first. Don’t assume the problem is your pump until you’ve checked everything else.
