Dr. Solomon Carter Fuller was America’s first black psychiatrist, APA's first Black member and one of the first Black physicians to hold faculty rank at an American medical school. Dr. Fuller overcame barriers to advance his profession and help further society’s understanding of dementia and mental illness. In recognition of his achievements, in 1969, the APA established the Solomon Carter Fuller Award to honor Black mental health pioneers.

Dr. Charles Prudhomme, the first Black Vice President of APA, and artist, Mrs. Naida Willette Page, present a portrait of Solomon Carter Fuller, MD, the first Black member of APA, in 1971.
Dr. Prudhomme commissioned the portrait as a gift to the Association.
