Christmas can be a lot for sensory systems 🎄✨ Try these 5 sensory activities to help kids feel calm, organized, and ready to enjoy the season:

Brushing / deep pressure 🧴
Use a sensory brush or firm “squeeze hugs” to give calming input (always with caregiver/therapist guidance).

Fidget toys 🤲
Pop-its, putty, stretch bands, or textured fidgets can keep hands busy and support focus during parties, dinners, and travel.

Heavy work 💪
Wall pushes, carrying gifts, pushing a laundry basket, animal walks, or jumping—great for grounding and self-regulation.

Sensory bins 🌾
Rice, beans, cotton “snow,” or kinetic sand + scoops/cups for calming tactile play (supervise for mouthing).

Sensory lights + quiet corner 💡
Soft lights, a cozy tent/blanket, and calming visuals for a quick reset when the day feels overwhelming.

Save this for the holidays—and tell me which one your kid loves most! 🎁🧩

Big skills are built through the right kind of input. ✨
This session focused on helping the nervous system stay regulated while strengthening coordination, visual processing, and sustained attention. These foundational skills support smoother transitions, better participation, and more independence at home and in school. 💪🧠✅

🌟 What Is Functional Play? 🌟
Functional play is more than just having fun — it’s how children learn, grow, and make sense of the world.

When a child uses toys with purpose, they build the foundation for communication, problem-solving, social skills, and independence. Functional play looks like:

✨ Pushing a car on a track instead of spinning the wheels
✨ Building with blocks to make towers or bridges
✨ Pretending to cook, feed a doll, or care for a toy
✨ Completing puzzles or matching shapes
✨ Playing simple turn-taking games with others

These activities help develop:
🧠 Cognitive skills
🤲 Fine motor & coordination skills
💬 Language & social skills
💗 Imagination and creativity

Functional play is a key part of healthy development — and YES, it can be taught, supported, and encouraged!

For children, engaging in sensory play can retrain the brain's response to sensory information. This helps them cope better when dealing with different sounds, textures, lights, scents and taste.

Mixing sensory activities with other skills helps to work on sensory regulation and attention.

Visual perceptual skills enable a child to make sense of and interpret what they are seeing. These skills include: Visual discrimination - matching two objects that are the same. Visual memory - the ability to remember visual information.

Visual perception is necessary for reading, writing, and movement. Without it, children may find daily tasks such as completing homework, solving puzzles, or getting dressed extremely stressful.
