Skincare RITUAL from a Geisha.

Every step in a geisha’s ritual has a special technique, just like the refined crafts they are trained in. You’ll likely find a geisha gently patting an essence toner onto her skin, and lightly pushing the product upwards from her chin to her forehead. It is because the opening of the pores face downwards. As I was mentioning in the previous post “Meet the geisha - part I”, every geisha is assisted by professional male dressers called “otokoshi”, the only men allowed in an “okiya”. After dressing, geisha apply their classical makeup: opaque white foundation, defined brows, and crimson cupid-bow lips finished with crystallized sugar as a gloss. Given the rigorous hours geisha keep, their physically demanding performances, and the full makeup they constantly wear, you wouldn’t expect them to have beautiful complexions. But if you’re ever lucky enough to spot a fresh-faced geisha of any age - from seventeen to seventy - you will marvel at her immaculate skin.

🌟 MEET THE GEISHA - PART I:

The below video and one of my favorite books 👉🏻 “A Geisha’s Journey: My Life as a Kyoto Apprentice”, showed me the path to becoming a geisha. This book describes the path to becoming a geisha as akin to the trajectory of a prima ballerina. A young woman starts training as early as fifteen years old, and after one year of intense daily tutelage in an “okiya”, or geisha house, she is tested before elevating to the rank of a “maiko”, an apprentice geisha which is a title unique to trainees in Kyoto.

However, that is the beginning of her journey. Maiko then dedicate an average of three to five years to training and performing before they graduate to the status of an actual geisha, or “geiko” as they are known in Kyoto. A geisha’s typical working day starts in the morning with three hours of intense arts training followed by another six to eight hours of performance and appearances. Of course, that schedule doesn’t account for her prep time to don an ornate ceremonial kimono with padded hems that can weigh more than thirty pounds. They are assisted by professional male dresses called “otokoshi”, the only men allowed in an okiya.
