Quality ABA care provides support not only for the family member on the spectrum, but for mom and dad as well! And with good reason! Parent training is where progress becomes real life.

Direct therapy hours with a behavior technician matter. Supervision hours with a behavior analyst are important. But skills stick and progress proceeds when families have clear, doable strategies to use between sessions. The biggest breakthroughs often occur when parents and caregivers are confidently trained. Rather than focusing on “winning” the struggle, choose a plan that reduces friction. These four tools work because they clarify expectations and reinforce the behavior you want to see.

Two choices, for example, communicates that you expect shoes on their feet while giving your child an appropriate way to feel some control. Without choices, a child may get stuck because they don’t want these shoes, but in the moment can’t express which ones they prefer. Or they may start offering their own alternatives: barefoot, socks only, rain boots, sandals, etc., which can turn the routine into a negotiation.

Pick one strategy and try it consistently for 5 days in a row. Mark your calendar each day you do it. If you want, tell us your child’s toughest routine (morning, bath, homework, bedtime) and we’ll suggest a simple First/Then script.

Prepare ahead when possible.
Respect sensory limits.
Keep expectations flexible.
Prioritize regulation over perfection.

There’s no right way to experience this season, only what works best for your child and your family. We’re here to support you through every season of growth.
