Teaching a neurodiverse classroom is one of the most creative, meaningful, and skilled jobs there is. And we want to share a few strategies that behavior specialists use every day that work just as beautifully in a classroom setting.
The best part? They work for every student, not just the ones with IEPs.
๐๏ธ Post a visual schedule every single day
Knowing what comes next reduces anxiety and increases focus, for every child in the room. A simple written or picture schedule on the board can change the whole energy of a classroom morning.
๐ Catch them being good, out loud and specifically
"Marcus, I noticed you went straight to your seat when you came in this morning. That was really responsible." Specific praise is more powerful than any consequence. Aim for four positive comments for every one correction.
โฑ๏ธ Give transition warnings
"In five minutes we're going to clean up and move to reading." That one sentence prevents more disruptions than almost anything else. Kids, especially kids who struggle with change, thrive when they can see what's coming.
๐ฏ Break big tasks into smaller steps
Instead of "write a paragraph," try "first, write your topic sentence. Just that one sentence. Show me when you're done." Smaller steps mean more success moments, and more success moments mean more confidence.
๐คซ Use quiet signals instead of public corrections
A private hand signal, a sticky note on the desk, a gentle tap, these redirect behavior without embarrassing a child in front of their peers. Dignity matters. A lot.
๐ช Build in movement
Every 20 minutes, find a reason for students to stand up, stretch, walk to the board, hand something out. Bodies that have moved are brains that can focus.
๐ Connect before you correct
When a student is dysregulated, a warm check-in before addressing the behavior goes a long way. "Hey, you okay today?" can open a door that a consequence never could.
Teachers, you are shaping so much more than academics. The way a child feels in your classroom stays with them for a very long time.
Thank you for everything you do. ๐โจ
