Small incision, small patients. We constantly design ways of achieving cures with the minimal amount of injury to our babies. Here in the picture, Dr. Alkhoury and Dr. Lau performing a thoracoscopic repair of a tracheoesophageal fistula.

Calisto, MD , Shahab Shaffiey and Felipe Pedroso is devoted to the comprehensive surgical care of newborns, infants and children. The practice is based on the campus of Nicklaus Children’s Hospital. The surgeons are members of the hospital’s medical staff and its teaching faculty. The group also serves the pediatric surgical needs associated with the Nicklaus Children’s Hospital Emergency Department.

Join us this Friday March 26 for Grand Rounds, Dr . Felipe Pedroso will cover ECMO in neonatal and pediatric patients. He is an expert on the topic and has published several articles on the topic.

❤️We wanted to share this little one’s story, he was born with esophageal atresia, a birth defect in which part of a baby's esophagus (the tube that connects the mouth to the stomach) does not develop properly. He underwent surgery to reconstruct his esophagus in the first days of live and is doing well since then!

Airway foreign bodies! Here you can see several objects that can be ingested by children, toys, coins and even a needle are shown here. Those objects can become lodged in the larynx, trachea, and bronchus. The size and shape of the object determine the site of obstruction; large, round, or expandable objects produce complete obstruction, and irregularly shaped objects allow air passage around the object, resulting in partial obstruction.

Pediatric Surgeons can extract them using an instrument that has a grasper and a camera under general anesthesia. This is a common procedure done by our team of Pediatric Surgeons!!
