Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) offers benefits to plastic surgery patients
Several studies have reported on the positive impact of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy, as discussed in a recent issue of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, the official medical journal of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS). However, the report also determined several limitations with using PRP therapy for facial aesthetic procedures, primarily due to the absence of PRP preparation and injection standards.
PRP therapy is not unique to the world of plastic surgery. The therapy is used in areas including sports medicine, heart surgery, and wound care. PRP involves drawing a small sample of the patient’s blood in order to generate growth responses from the surrounding platelets. In aesthetic medicine, plastic surgeons have used the regenerative properties associated with PRP to elicit natural healing responses from the body and provide the face and surrounding areas with a healthier, more natural appearance.
All 14 of the existing major studies investigating the effects of PRP as a facial rejuvenation tactic have determined the results of the therapy to be positive. Common benefits include a reduction in wrinkles and stronger skin.
