The badly damaged US Navy destroyer USS Selfridge (DD-357) after the Battle of Vella Lavella. Her bow had been blown off by a torpedo from a Japanese destroyer during the engagement. Note the 5-inch/38-caliber twin gun mount in the remains of the forward turrret. Alongside is USS O'Bannon (D-450), which damaged her bow in a collision with USS Chevalier (DD-451) during the action.
