One of the most important decisions a birthing person will make is choosing their birth team.

Will it consist of an obstetrician? A midwife? Will a doula be a part of the team?

It’s incredibly important to take time to consider who will help create and honor the environment that is desired when welcoming your sweet baby. ❤️

Did you know that a birthing person will labor best wherever they feel the safest and most secure?

For some that is a hospital and for others it may mean a home or birthing center birth.

Investment. I remember finding out I was pregnant and spending my time and energy making a baby registry, setting up the nursery and doing all of the things I assumed were important.

I never stopped to think, nor did anyone tell me, that I should be looking beyond the birth and investing time and energy setting up a plan for my postpartum journey.

Who would I contact if I had trouble breastfeeding? How would meals be prepped, my house cleaned and laundry done? Who would help me as my body healed and entered this journey into motherhood?

I didn’t spend much time thinking about my emotions and the exhaustion to come and so I wasn’t fully prepared for those things.

We spend our time and energy in places that we see value. I’m here to tell you that childbirth education, especially the postpartum period, is often overlooked and mothers will benefit from this crucial information.

I’d love to chat with you about the postpartum journey and help you prepare for the adventure ahead.

“There’s one last amazing thing associated with the first arrival (of lactobacilli) in the baby’s gut - they help train the immune system. This demonstrates the brilliance of the whole process: First, the microbes colonize the baby’s gut microbiome; second, they digest lactose to produce energy; third, they play an active part in preventing harmful pathogens taking hold in the baby’s gut; and finally they help initiate the training of the immune system.”

Back to reading about the microbiome! The human body never ceases to amaze me!

Current read 📚

Did you know that current research suggests that the way we enter the world could significantly influence the diversity and composition of our gut microbiome?

Why does this matter?

The role of the microbiome is critical in human health because it keeps our bodies functioning and protects us from disease. Having a compromised microbiome can lead to long term health consequences.

Richmond friends - I'd love to get 2-4 couples for my first session of BirthWorks classes starting on February 5th. The class is 8 weeks and will meet locally. I'm offering this class for $225 which is $70 off of the normal price of the class.

There is no "recommended" time in pregnancy to take this class - the information is useful from beginning to end so everyone is welcome.

This truly is an incredible class - you will see that you will feel supported no matter how or where you intend to birth your baby. We discuss fears and concerns surrounding birth, we discuss and practice ways to move in labor to help with discomfort, we talk about epidurals and Pitocin and, yes, having an unmedicated birth; it is all encompassing and totally inclusive.

I am so very excited to be teaching this class and I hope that you'll consider joining me! As always, I am more than happy to answer any and all questions that you have!

Please feel free to share this post and info with anyone you know who may benefit from the information!
