On World Pneumonia Day (November 12), the International Psychogeriatric Association (IPA) underscores the critical need for rigorous safety protocols for older adults with dementia in acute hospital settings.
We reference the impactful poster presentation from the IPA 2024 International Congress, "Preventable adverse events and related outcomes among people with dementia in hospital settings: Scoping review," authored by Lucía Catalán and Deborah Oliveira, PhD.https://www.ipa-online.org/UserFiles/file/IPADraftofAbstractBook2024.pdf
Their findings revealed a stark challenge for geriatric mental health care: hospitalized individuals with dementia face a 2.8 to 5.2 times higher risk of suffering a preventable Adverse Event (AE) compared to other patient groups. Notably, infections (such as pneumonia), delirium, and falls are the most frequently reported AEs in non-surgical environments.
The association is clear and concerning: these preventable AEs are linked to severe negative outcomes, including increased mortality, longer hospital stays, and a higher risk of discharge to residential care. The IPA calls on the scientific community to prioritize research to definitively establish this relationship and to translate findings into immediate, actionable improvements in hospital care and safety standards for the dementia population.
