On World Pneumonia Day (November 12), the International Psychogeriatric Association (IPA) underscores the critical need for rigorous safety protocols for older adults with dementia in acute hospital settings.

We reference the impactful poster presentation from the IPA 2024 International Congress, "Preventable adverse events and related outcomes among people with dementia in hospital settings: Scoping review," authored by Lucía Catalán and Deborah Oliveira, PhD.https://www.ipa-online.org/UserFiles/file/IPADraftofAbstractBook2024.pdf

Their findings revealed a stark challenge for geriatric mental health care: hospitalized individuals with dementia face a 2.8 to 5.2 times higher risk of suffering a preventable Adverse Event (AE) compared to other patient groups. Notably, infections (such as pneumonia), delirium, and falls are the most frequently reported AEs in non-surgical environments.

The association is clear and concerning: these preventable AEs are linked to severe negative outcomes, including increased mortality, longer hospital stays, and a higher risk of discharge to residential care. The IPA calls on the scientific community to prioritize research to definitively establish this relationship and to translate findings into immediate, actionable improvements in hospital care and safety standards for the dementia population.

The International Psychogeriatric Association (IPA) strongly echoes the vital message delivered by at the WSSD in Doha (Nov 4, 2025): Social protection is not charity; it is justice.
With 165 million older adults worldwide lacking a pension, the call to integrate aging into social protection strategies is paramount. This lack of dignity and security is a significant, modifiable risk factor for late-life mental distress, anxiety, and depression.
We recognize for their unwavering commitment. The IPA is dedicated to the same goal: ensuring the comprehensive well-being—both mental and physical—of the global older adult population.

We proudly celebrate Dr. Mustafa Atee and the IPA Early Career Network (ECN) on their commentary regarding physical restraint use in older adults being featured in Undark Magazine!

This critical work from our ECN emphasizes that the use of physical restraints is a key ethical and safety issue in contemporary geriatric mental health care, directly impacting the well-being and dignity of older individuals.

As a leading voice in psychogeriatrics, the IPA stresses the urgent need for evidence-based alternatives and a commitment to restraint-free environments across all care settings. The ECN commentary provides essential clinical and ethical guidance for all health professionals, reinforcing that restraint use should only be considered as a last resort when imminent severe harm cannot be mitigated by other means.

On International Carers Day (November 5th), the International Psychogeriatric Association (IPA) recognizes the indispensable contributions of professional and family caregivers worldwide. Their tireless dedication is the cornerstone of support for older adults living with mental illness, cognitive impairment, and disability.

Caring for individuals with dementia presents unique and profound challenges. High-quality care is intrinsically linked to the well-being and support of the care provider. As highlighted by ongoing research, achieving excellence in care requires understanding the experiences and barriers faced by care staff daily.

The IPA calls for systemic support for our caregivers, recognizing that their wellness directly translates to the quality of life for people living with dementia. We urge institutions and health systems to prioritize the following recommendations:

🔵Invest in Staff-Led Training: Implement continuous education focused on person-centered approaches and non-pharmacological interventions to manage behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD).

🔵Mitigate Burnout: Ensure adequate staffing levels and provide accessible psychosocial support and mental health resources to prevent compassion fatigue and burnout among care teams.

🔵Empower Communication: Create clinical environments that actively incorporate caregiver perspectives—both professional and familial—into the care plan, fostering a collaborative model of support.

🔵Champion Dignity: Advocate for care settings that promote the autonomy and dignity of both the person living with dementia and their caregiver.

💙Thank you to every caregiver for your unwavering commitment. We see you, and we support your essential work.

During Diabetes Awareness Month, the International Psychogeriatric Association (IPA) underscores the critical intersection of physical and mental health in older adults, drawing attention to the costly comorbidity of diabetes and depression.

We revisit a key poster presentation from the IPA 2024 International Congress in Buenos Aires: "Depression, diabetes, and healthcare services use". This study, based on the Brazilian Longitudinal Study of Aging (ELSI-Brazil), investigated the healthcare utilization patterns of the population aged 50 years and older.

The findings emphasize a stark reality: individuals with co-occurring depression and diabetes were more likely than any other group to have been admitted to a hospital in the previous year. This highlights a distressing and costly pattern of care utilization.

The clinical implication is clear: Screening for depression must be incorporated into routine diabetes care to reduce related complications and subsequent hospitalizations. Prioritizing mental health is essential for improving physical outcomes and reducing healthcare burdens in this vulnerable population.

On World Stroke Day, the International Psychogeriatric Association (IPA) underscores the profound neuropsychiatric and functional sequelae that often follow stroke.

⭐We highlight a recent open-access publication in International Psychogeriatrics (August 2025): "Transcranial magnetic stimulation combined with sensorimotor training for treatment of orofacial apraxia after ischemic stroke: A case report."

This essential research explores a promising, integrated therapeutic strategy combining central neuromodulation (rTMS) with peripheral rehabilitation for patients struggling with orofacial apraxia and subsequent dysphagia after an ischemic event. This innovative approach offers crucial insights for restoring essential functions like safe oral intake and communication.

We encourage our global network of clinicians and researchers to review this case report to inform the development of novel neurorehabilitation protocols in post-stroke care.

📣The International Psychogeriatric Association (IPA) is proud to announce the formal launch of the AI Taskforce, a critical initiative that had its first debut at our recent Congress in Japan. This dedicated group is focused on guiding the ethical and effective integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into psychogeriatrics.🤖

As highlighted by Dr. Ipsit Vahia, who leads this effort, the inaugural open meeting confirmed a clear consensus among participants: there is an urgent need for practice guidelines and skills training to enable practitioners to use these innovative tools optimally. This perspective aligns with the view that professionals in the field who will serve as primary users must be involved in the shaping and guiding around how is deployed in clinical care and other settings for

The Taskforce is driven by the expertise of an accomplished international team, including Dr. Andrea Iaboni, Dr. Monica Patrascu, Dr. Kreshnik Hoti, Dr. Temitope Farombi, and Dr. Agustin Ibanez. Their work will concentrate on developing guidance for both clinical use and for applying AI approaches in geropsychiatry research.

This work has already begun, underscoring the IPA’s proactive approach to innovation and its commitment to defining the standards for technology in geriatric mental health.
