WEATHER UPDATE: In consultation with the Milwaukee County Office of Emergency Management, I have declared a snow emergency for Monday, March 16, 2026.

The National Weather Service has issued a Blizzard Warning for all of Southeast Wisconsin until 4:00 PM on Monday, March 16. Milwaukee County is expected to see significant snow accumulation and high winds during this time. These strong winds coupled with snow overnight into Monday will create dangerous whiteout conditions and make travel extremely hazardous.

During a snow emergency, all non-essential departments will be closed for the safety of County employees and the public. Therefore, several County facilities will be closed on Monday, March 16, including the Milwaukee County Courthouse, Vel R. Phillips Youth & Family Justice Center, Milwaukee County Zoo, and the Marcia P. Coggs Health and Human Services Center (with the exception of the Behavioral Health Mobile Crisis Teams). Certain departments and positions defined as “essential” will continue performing duties during the snow emergency. Departments with employees who can work remotely on Monday are encouraged to do so at their discretion.

Travel is not advised and will be difficult throughout this weather event. Unsheltered residents are encouraged to call 2-1-1 to learn more about accessing nearby warming centers, as well as request housing services through a coordinated intake process.

Self-regulation is the ability to manage and control your thoughts, emotions, and behaviors in response to situations or challenges. Recognizing your feelings, calming yourself when upset, and choosing appropriate actions rather than reacting impulsively.

Self-regulation helps us stay focused, make thoughtful decisions, cope with stress, and interact effectively with others.

Parents’ first reactions to being told their child has Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) can vary widely. Many experience a mix of strong emotions and thoughts as they process the diagnosis. Some of the most common initial reactions include:

1. Shock or Disbelief

Many parents feel stunned or overwhelmed at first. Even if they suspected developmental differences, hearing a formal diagnosis can feel unexpected or difficult to absorb.

2. Denial

3. Fear and Anxiety

4. Grief or Sadness

5. Guilt or Self-Blame

6. Relief

For some parents, the diagnosis actually brings relief. It can provide:
• An explanation for behaviors they noticed or misunderstood
• Access to services

7. Determination to Help

After the initial emotional response, many parents move toward action—seeking therapies, support groups, educational resources, and advocacy opportunities.
