Alverno Food Studies Club

Alverno Food Studies Club We are a group of Alverno College students who have a passion for food,
wellness, & the environment. Won't you come join us!? Why explore food studies?

The study of the relationships between food and the human experience. These relationships can be explored from a variety of perspectives and from a range of places in the food system, from production to consumption, or from farm to fork. Presently there is a nutrition course for Nursing, a GEC course (“Psychology of Food”) and a “Philosophy of Food” course being taught at Alverno College that has drawn interest to the topic. It is the world’s largest industry! The food business is estimated to be a $3-4 trillion endeavor with employing tens of millions of workers. It also represents 10% of global Gross Domestic Product. Beyond its material importance, food has tremendous cultural and symbolic importance. Examining peoples' relationships with food speaks to their beliefs, passions, background knowledge and assumptions, personality traits, and social ties. Food is something common to all in every person, group, ethinicity, and religion. Besides, food can be fun!
