This week’s sedra, Beshallach (Exodus 13:17-17:16), tells about the Israelites' exodus from Egypt. As they cross the sea they sing a song of praise to G-d for their redemption from slavery. This Sabbath is called Shabbat Shira due to the song being part of the Torah.

When incredible things happen, such as the parting of the sea, we are quick to offer praise to G-d and thanks. Yet smaller miracles and blessings occur every day. May we learn to be appreciative of all our blessings – large and small – with a song of gratitude in our hearts all the time.

In this week’s Torah reading, (Exodus 10:1-13;16) we read about the last three of the ten plagues and the Exodus from Egypt. G-d hardened Pharaoh's heart to ask him to “Let My People Go.” This phrase has become the cry of people enslaved or persecuted over the centuries. It is a call for people to gather and speak up to make the necessary change happen.

This reminds me of the man who lived a good, moral life but complained to G-d that he had never won the lottery. “What do I have to do?” he asks. Suddenly a booming voice from above is heard saying, “Buy a ticket.”

Sometimes good things just happen to fall into our laps, but more often we have to ask for what we need, followed by hard work to make it happen. Like Moses in his quest to free the Israelites, we need to speak up and act to make the changes we desire to see and make good things happen.

In this week’s Torah Portion, Vaera (Exodus 6:2-9:35) we read about the first seven plagues. Each time Moses and Aaron ask Pharaoh to “Let My People Go,” Pharaoh's heart is hardened and he refuses. The plagues are the G-d’s punishment. In this week’s portion Pharaoh hardens his heart, but next week when we read of the last three plagues the text says that G-d hardens Pharaoh’s heart. What does this teach us?

To harden one’s heart is to close it off to feelings. At first, Pharaoh, who is in control of his feelings, refuses to feel the pain and anguish of the Israelite people. Eventually, after doing this so many times, he is no longer in control of what his heart can feel and is stuck being insensitive.

Are we ever guilty of hardening our hearts to others? I suspect we are all guilty at some time or another. Only by avoiding the tendency to make it a habit can we learn to open our hearts and to be sensitive to those who need our help. We pay attention to the health of our physical heart; may we also learn to take care of our heart with caring and compassion.
