Aging with a spinal cord injury (SCI) brings changes we don’t talk about enough.

“Many of us are figuring it out on our own, comparing notes, and hoping the medical world catches up,” says Cheryl Angelelli, a Coloplast Ambassador with SCI.

In today’s blog, she shares how age-related hormone shifts have affected her bladder, sleep, and more.

It’s National Popcorn Day! 🍿
A fun treat for most people… and a carefully calculated decision for many ostomates.

Corn has a bit of a mischievous side. It’s delicious, sure, but it can also bring along some unwanted surprises like cramping or blockages, and we all know how tough those can be.

That said, some people really love their popcorn! Deciding whether or not to eat it is really personal. If you are celebrating National Popcorn Day, just remember the classic ostomy rule: CHEW WELL.

✨ Go slow and start small if it’s your first time.
✨ Leave the unpopped kernels behind (they are not your friends).
✨ Don’t forget your water, it helps keep things moving along.

Not a fan of traditional popcorn? Totally fair. Rice cakes, Popcorners, and hulless popcorn are popular “safer snack” stand-ins many ostomates have tried.

What happens if I don’t update my prescription?

Since January 1st, if your prescription does not include the word “hydrophilic” or brand/item number, your supplier may not be able to provide a hydrophilic intermittent catheter, and you could be switched to a different product than what you are already using.

📋 To continue to receive your catheters, all you need to do is talk to your supplier or prescribing clinician, they will take care of the rest!

When John B. Grimes woke up from a coma after surviving meningococcal meningitis 30 years ago, the world felt strange and unfamiliar. At just 19 years old, everything he had known about life suddenly seemed out of reach. As the days passed and some things didn’t come back—like his sight—he made a choice: instead of waiting for life to return to what it was, he would move forward and adapt. “Don’t wait,” he told himself, and it became his mantra.

John had to relearn the most basic things—how to swallow, how to walk, how to accept the changes in his body. It was a long, painful process, which also included learning how to manage a neurogenic bladder; he needed to use a catheter to empty his bladder. It wasn’t easy, but John refused to let it hold him back.

To other catheter users who are just getting started on their journey, John says: “You’re allowed to feel unsure, but don’t confuse uncertainty with inability. You’ll get the hang of this. Start small, give yourself patience, and remember: a catheter doesn’t shrink your life. It simply changes the script. You can still live boldly, fully, and on your own terms.”

Do you use a hydrophilic catheter? Make sure you continue to receive your catheter.
Here’s what you need to do before the end of the year to continue getting the same product:

1️⃣ Contact your supplier or prescribing clinician and say:
👉 “Please update my catheter prescription to say ‘hydrophilic’ or my brand name/item number of the catheter I have been receiving.”

The Coloplast Story

The Coloplast story begins back in 1954. Elise Sørensen is a nurse. Her sister Thora has just had an ostomy operation and is afraid to go out in public, fearing that her stoma might leak. Listening to her sister’s problems, Elise conceives the idea of the world’s first adhesive ostomy bag.

Based on Elise’s idea, Aage Louis-Hansen, a civil engineer and plastics manufacturer, and his wife Johanne Louis-Hansen, a trained nurse, created the ostomy bag. An ostomy bag that helps Thora – and thousands of people like her – to live the life they want to lead.

A simple solution that makes a difference.

Today, our business includes Ostomy Care, Continence Care, Wound & Skin Care and Urology Care. We operate globally and employ about 11,000 employees.
