We’re not responding to one moment. We’re responding to years of it stacking in our bodies. Another life taken. Our leaders arrested. Being told to stay calm while the harm keeps repeating. Then being gaslit like this is normal. This isn’t just anger — it’s the thousand cuts. Our bodies know what’s real even when the news won’t say it. At Reviving Roots, we’re not trying to get rid of this feeling. We’re asking: where can we put it so it doesn’t destroy us — and so it helps us protect each other instead?

We’re closed Monday to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
We’re also closed Friday as we step away from work in solidarity.
This is us choosing alignment, care, and community over business as usual.

“Being in isolation,” James said, “is not the move right now.”

“Marlee James, the CEO and owner of the Black mental health practice Reviving Roots, said programming such as a “Black in America” support group is going ahead as planned. Reviving Roots, which James explained was founded in response to the “historical trauma caused by white supremacy,” has and will continue to host educational events for clients, including the “Peace and Power” community safety series that includes deescalation and self-defense training.”

Advocates say the shooting and ICE enforcement action is yet another traumatic event affecting people's mental health.

We checked in with our staff because this is what we do around here.
We’re a healing space, and when things feel heavy out in the world, we don’t pretend it’s not happening. We slow down, we tell the truth, and we take care of each other.
Even in the middle of all this — state violence, noise, uncertainty — we’re still here, still tending, still choosing community.

And special thank you to Ro, our former Admin intern turned volunteer, who put this video together with so much care.

Y’all, it’s a lot right now.

So we’re opening the space. A Place to Land is a soft drop-in for rest, gentle movement, journaling, coloring, snacks, and tea. You’re welcome anytime 10am–1pm (mindful motion at 12pm).

This is a Black-centered space — please hold that with care.

If you need somewhere to be for a bit, we got you.

Let’s be real: pretending this is normal isn’t honest. What we’re witnessing is state-sanctioned violence, justified through power and fear — and our bodies know exactly what that does. Staying connected, rather than isolated or silent, is part of how we take care of ourselves right now.

Bria, our Clinical Director, said something that stuck with me: we can name what we’re doing as an organization, but we also need to name what might actually support people right now. So this post is for that.

With ICE showing up more openly and the government using fear and punishment to gain power, a lot of us are feeling activated. That’s not a personal failure — it’s our bodies responding to real harm. When we say stay grounded, we don’t mean stay calm. We mean stay connected to your experience so you can protect yourself, care for your people, and move with intention.

We’re holding this with you.

This work touches the body and the nervous system — so every session includes grounding and emotional support.

Meet Matt Gentles, MA, therapist at Reviving Roots.

Matt will be present for all six workshops to:
• support emotional processing
• help regulate the nervous system
• offer grounding when things get intense

Because empowerment without regulation isn’t wellness.
Limited sliding scale spots.
