I love a craft that takes 5 minutes (or less!) to set up, uses things you already have at home, and packs in tons of language opportunities! Grab a box, draw a quick picture, poke a few holes, color the ends of some Q-tips, and let your little one “decorate” by poking them into the holes. Simple and so much fun! 🎄
Here’s how to build language while you play:
1. Holiday vocabulary: Talk about what you drew - snowman, hat, scarf, wreath, Christmas tree, star, lights, presents. Label, describe, and repeat!
2. Choices: “Which color should go in next, red or blue?” Offering choices boosts communication and helps toddlers feel in control.
3. Practice “more”: Hold the Q-tips and offer them one at a time. Model “more,” wait a few seconds, and see if your child imitates or signs back before giving the next one.
4. Location words: Bring in spatial concepts as you decorate. “The presents go under the tree.” “Let’s put a light on top of the tree.” “Point to the bow that’s on the wreath.”
