Mississippi Hippie Mama

Mississippi Hippie Mama Welcome! I'm a mama of two, childbirth educator, lactavist, home cook, and generally just interested in all things funny, healthy, and natural-minded.

My passions include following around the love of my life, raising decent and kind children, natural birth, breastfeeding, sewing, babywearing, red wine, cooking yummy and sometimes impractical food, reading, yoga, running. My page and blog are the places where I cobble together ideas, reflect, record recipes we enjoy, and think things through in writing. You can also find more information about the comprehensive childbirth classes I teach there. My approach to pregnancy, birth, and breastfeeding is holistic--look at all of the parts that contribute to your health, happiness, well-being, and satisfaction. Too often the importance of the birth process and experience is underestimated or even ignored in our culture. I recognize that pregnancy and birth have lasting impacts on the physical and mental health of both mother and child. The feeling of empowerment that can accompany birth prepares women for the job of mothering. My In Focus classes do just that--focus in on what is important, what is often blurry in mainstream shows, what is left out of conversations, what knowledge has been lost after generations of over medicalized birth. The goal of class is to decide what's important to you and figure out how to achieve it. That is a long description! Basically, all parts of me and all of my hobbies and passions are located here. I'm putting all of my eggs into one basket...finally.

In addition to core healing, I've been learning about pelvic floor issues--too tight, too loose, and how chronic postures help or hurt us in "ungluing" the pelvis and sacrum among other things. Katy Bowman's blog, exercises, and podcasts are awesome resources!

ATooTightPelvicFloor April 25, 2012 / 55 comments Hypertonus of the pelvic floor is extremely common and often treated incorrectly (as general pelvic floor weakness) because many do not understand the biomechanical functions of muscle well. The problem lies here: 1. There is some sort of pelvic floo...

As I prepare for my class tomorrow on prenatal core strength, I'm re-reading so many good posts I've bookmarked about alignment, hip, core, shoulder stuff, body mechanics, etc.... This is such a great read as are the hyperlinked posts within...http://breakingmuscle.com/mobility-recovery/to-clench-or-not-to-clench-your-butt-that-is-the-question

Perma-clenching is often an unconscious habit created by deep core weakness, pelvic misalignment, pelvic floor weakness, and lumbar instability.

Big week here! I had the privilege of collaborating on then sitting in on a presentation for a local hospital on tethered oral tissue, a better catch-all term for tongue and lip ties. This group of 10 pediatric surgeons and pediatricians were SO open to learning how to examine a baby, symptoms, complimentary therapies, and what the research says about revision and outcomes among other things. Their willingness to give up an hour and a half of their day, give their full attention to the presenters, and dedication to improving the lives of their patients was heart warming. Think of all of the other great changes in mother-baby care that parents have pushed for through grassroots advocacy!

To continue in the same vein of core rehab and healing, this blog post blew my mind! I'm constantly reading and learning all that I can: http://www.mamaligned.com/blog/the-squat-is-not-the-new-kegel-part-2

Here is a great place to start if you have multiple kids, aches and pains, a body you just "can't get back" no matter how hard you work out, and a belly button that never looked the same after your baby. This rehab also works well for pelvic floor issues, since it's the floor of your core
