Meet the Giant Frogfish — Antennarius commerson.
It was sitting right there on the reef, sixty feet below the surface in Dominica, Commonwealth of Dominica. Completely still. Perfectly camouflaged against the red sponge. To the untrained eye, it looked like nothing at all.

It took me several minutes to realize I was staring directly into its face.

That's the thing about frogfish — they are masters of disguise. They don't swim away. They don't hide. They simply sit in plain sight and trust that you won't notice them. Most people never do.

This is a Christmas tree worm — a tiny polychaete no bigger than your thumbnail, anchored to the coral, filtering the ocean one breath at a time. I photographed this one sixty feet below the surface in Dominica, Commonwealth of Dominica, just days ago.
