Here in the Pacific Northwest, we are expected an extreme heatwave today. I also like to soak my feed and add chia seeds and carrots and blueberries to my horse's feed when the weather takes a sudden spike in heat. Moderation is key and I don't add so many that it will upset their stomach but the treat adds nutrients and liquids and entices them to eat.

Keeping your horse cool and comfortable during periods of hot weather can help prevent heat issues including heat stress and heat stroke.

A client call prompted me to remind people that if your horse's symptoms come on suddenly, look for clues as to it's source. There are many blooming plants right now that some horses(for mysterious reasons🙄) may eat even if they are toxic. Lupine is one of them.

Lupines (Lupinus spp.) are annual or perennial blooming flowers. They are native to North and South Americas and the Mediterranean. It has been naturalized in the cooler temperate regions of southeastern Australia, New Zealand, eastern Canada, and throughout Europe. Lupinus are considered troublesom...

Are you wondering when you can return to a normal exercise routine with your horse? It is imperative to give your horse adequate time to recover from smoke inhalation before returning to an exercise routine. Airway damage resulting from wildfire smoke takes between four to six weeks to heal. Horses should return to exercise no sooner than two weeks after wildfire smoke has completely dissipated. While it is very tempting to return to riding as soon as possible, doing so too early can provoke the condition, delay healing, and compromise your horses performance for several weeks to months.

RETURNING TO AN EXERCISE ROUTINE AFTER SMOKE HAS DISSIPATED:
*Ideally, provide four to six weeks before returning to an exercise routine.
Week 1 & 2: Provide two weeks off. Your horse can be turned out during this time.
Week 3 & 4: Hand walk for two weeks.
Week 5 & 6: Walk and trot in the saddle for two weeks.
Week 7: Return to a normal exercise routine.

Dear Clients, due to Covid-19 some herbs are getting hard to source, especially for those clients on breathing blends. You may see delays in orders and fluctuations in price. I apologize, I know your horses depend on these blends. Thank you for your patience.
