Herbs for the Christmas Season 🎄
These herbs are more than just for use in our kitchens to season and flavor our Christmas dishes. Historically and traditionally they all have many other uses.
Sweet Basil (Ocimum basilicum) is a common culinary herb. It is used around the world in salads, pasta and soups and many other dishes. Historically, it is thought to symbolize love, protection and hospitality. Traditionally, it is anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antioxidant, a stress reducer and may improve cognitive function. It is also thought to be part of the plant material used in the manger when Christ was born.
Bay Leaf (Laurus nobilis) is another common culinary herb used to flavor mainly soups and stews. It can be burned and its smoke carries a warm, grounding scent that many find calming and clarifying. It is used in homes to help repel pests. Historically it has been used to symbolize victory, glory & resilience. Traditionally, for health it is considered antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory and may provide respiratory support.
Lavender (Lavendula spp) is also a culinary herb. It is one of the ingredients in Herbs de Provence, a blend used in France (and today, worldwide). It is used commonly in baked goods, lemonade, and many spice rubs. Historically it symbolized purity, virtue, peace and serenity. It is thought to have been beloved by Christ’s mother, Mary. Traditionally, lavender has been used for calming and relaxation. It also is a mild sleep aid and generally safe for children. It is antimicrobial, antiseptic, a good digestive aid and antioxidant.
Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis) is another culinary herb which is used in Mediterranean cooking. Also, with meat, stews and bread. It is part of the sage family. Historically, it honors remembrance and protection, love, loyalty and hope. It was commonly used during memorial services to honor those who have passed. Traditionally, it is thought to be antibacterial, antiviral, and anti-fungal. It is also commonly used for hair regrowth as a rinse.
Thyme (Thymus vulgaris) is a culinary herb which is commonly used to enhance the flavors of beef, lamb, chicken, fish and vegetables. Historically, thyme has been used to enhance courage, bravery & purification. It is another that is thought to be part of the plant material used in the manger when Christ was born. Traditionally, it is thought of as antiseptic and anti-inflammatory. It is often used in remedies for coughs and digestive issues.
