No one who saw me at Creative Mornings Fargo today would think, “boy does that girl know how to dance.”
One could easily have mistaken my movements for a seizure, a severe spasm, or my imitation of a monkey trapped in a bowl of Jell-o.
I didn’t know I was being livestreamed, or recorded. And guess what, I don’t care.
I used to think you had to drink to be comfortable on the dance floor. That lubricated the unease I suppose, but it also made me dizzy and worse, it made me have to p*e. So I didn’t dance. My family does.not.dance. My dad was excused from square dance in school, lest he damn his eternal soul and what not.
Sigh.
Among its many benefits, movement promotes brain cell growth, reduces inflammation, and improves blood flow and brain plasticity.
Socializing reduces stress hormones.
Dance in particular is good for engaging both hemispheres of the brain.
Ecstatic dance is a guided freeform style designed to loosen inhibitions and stop your judgy pants self from getting in the way of movement.
It’s more like playing than structured dance. It’s how Studio NoMo honors the yogic ethic of leela, or divine play.
Our first ecstatic dance party is coming up January 18.
No shoes, no booze, no judgement.
