But, some counties fare better than others:

Macon & Hale Counties—the two counties in Appalachian where the majority of residents are —have the lowest rates of proficiency in the region.

This means that nearly 2 out of every 3 adults have trouble , understanding, and following written instructions, menus, books, and forms at home, work, and in social situations.

In Fiscal Year 2025, received $10,217,797 in federal funds from the U.S. through the Adult Education and Family Literacy Act ( ), Title II of the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act ( ), a 2% decrease from FY 2024.
