For years I’ve had a dream of trying ceramics, and for years I ignored myself. I told myself I’d start when someone would do it with me, or when the time was right. The truth is, time came + went. I only continued to feel more and more resentful towards myself for not starting, with each year that passed. I decided that I’m no longer waiting for the external validation I thought I needed. This is my journey of being a beginner with ceramics. Meeting myself with something new. Getting out of my own way. Taking you all with me through this 8 week process.

Our trauma lives in the spaces beyond our words, or experiences. Trauma exists and happens in the nervous system.

Our brains are fascinating in the way that they will put up a 'shield', or release a 'fog' as we're experiencing something that is too much, happening too soon or too fast, or if we're not getting enough of something (care, love, validation, security, belonging, etc) for us to comprehend.⁠

Our brain does this naturally, organically, to protect us from our experience. ⁠How beautiful is that? That our bodies are built to protect us, to help us not experience the fear head on. ⁠

Some of the work we must do on ourselves and in our life is difficult and painful, it can unleash years of shame. This doesn't excuse us from doing this work.

When we peek into the stuff we're avoiding, the shadow, we can integrate the parts of ourselves we've rejected. This is where the magic (the transformation).

If you've been following along with understanding trauma, and how it manifests in the body through the sympathetic + the parasympathetic systems (if not, click back + take a peek at my other recent posts) then you know that trauma impacts our mind, body, soul in various ways.⁠

What we typically don't look at is how these various trauma states create narratives in our mind + controls what we think. Depending on what physiological state we're in, a familiar story or narrative might accompany.⁠

We can't change the narrative without regulating the state + tuning into our body. We 1st recognize the state we're in (fight, flight or freeze) and then gently take actions to shift towards ventral vagal (safety + feeling grounded). ⁠
