We were honored to have several of our people, departments and clinics recognized as winners and finalists in the annual “Best of the Palouse” contest sponsored by the Lewiston Tribune, Moscow-Pullman Daily News and Inland 360 Magazine.

Congratulations to our QuickCARE and Westside Clinics for being recognized as “Best of the Palouse” winners in the Walk-in Clinic and Primary Care clinic categories!

Whether it’s volunteering for additional assignments in the Washington National Guard or accepting a position as a Laboratory Assistant while working toward his goal of earning a degree in nursing, Mathew Alldredge always strives to expand his knowledge and skills.

Before moving back to the Palouse, Mathew served in the National Guard for around 10 years, where he completed a temporary assignment in Thailand as an aviation maintenance instructor, participating in a subject matter expert exchange between the Royal Thai Army and the U.S. Army. In 2013, he moved to Pullman to study Criminal Justice at Washington State University. In his senior year, Mathew accepted a job as a patrol deputy with the Latah County Sheriff’s Office, where he was inspired to continue his studies with a newfound interest in health care.

“My experiences in law enforcement have been the biggest influence on my decision to pursue a career in health care and eventually nursing,” he said. “I am drawn to work that provides a strong sense of purpose. Work that allows me to make a meaningful, positive impact in the lives of others.”

He joined Gritman’s Laboratory as a Phlebotomist in April 2024, seeking opportunities to gain direct patient care experience while completing prerequisite courses at Spokane Community College in preparation for applying to a nursing program. He has since been promoted twice, first to Laboratory Assistant and most recently to Phlebotomy Lead.

In addition to acting as a supervisor, Mathew provides phlebotomy services and processes specimens. He collects blood from patients in the Emergency Department, Critical Care Unit (CCU), Medical-Surgical Unit, Family Birth Center and other departments when needed.

Outside of work, Mathew enjoys camping, boating and going for bike rides with his 9-year-old daughter, who recently learned to ride a bike without the training wheels.

Thank you, Mathew, for your commitment to providing excellent and empathetic care!

Whether it’s a classic teddy bear or a purple hippo wearing a tutu, Diane Melville hopes her crochet creations bring joy to children at Gritman Medical Center.

Diane was born at Gritman and has lived all over the Palouse. For 30 years, she spent much of her time in cow camps. She rode through the mountains on horseback, accompanied by her trained dogs, keeping an eye on cattle.

Her “nana” taught her how to crochet 60 years ago. While she was still on the ranch, Diane began crocheting stuffed toys to donate to victims of domestic violence.

Now living in the Princeton-area countryside, Diane continues to crochet a variety of stuffed animals and dolls to donate to children who visit Gritman through our Volunteer Services program.

“That’s why I do it. It’s for the kids,” she said.

Some of her creations will be given to children who don’t have a stuffed animal to bring to Gritman's annual Teddy Bear Clinic, which is scheduled for 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, June 20.

The Teddy Bear Clinic is a free, family-friendly event where kids can explore the hospital and learn about health care and healthy habits in a fun and welcoming way.

No matter how your heart is feeling, our experienced clinicians across the Gritman Medical Center system remain committed to keeping you close to home for your care and recovery.

We're proud to offer a range of cardiac care services right here on the Palouse, and our experienced clinicians utilize the latest technology, including EKGs, cardiac imaging and state-of-the-art patient monitoring equipment.

Phyllis Vettrus, a retired educator and longtime resident of Moscow, recently donated $100,000 to the Gritman Foundation to support Gritman Medical Center’s cardiology services, allowing us to upgrade 2 EKG machines and replace Cardiac Rehabilitation monitoring equipment, a long-term investment into heart health services here on the Palouse.

You never know what your heart might need. Our hospital and clinic teams support you for every possibility, partnering with organizations across the region to ensure you are treated quickly, using the most advanced equipment, and with the highest level of compassionate care.

Congratulations to Dr. Michael Fields, who was recently named the 2026 Advocate of the Year by the Idaho Academy of Family Physicians! The organization praised him for reducing barriers to care, and for his “sustained, courageous, and patient-centered advocacy on behalf of individuals and communities often marginalized in the health care system.”

Dr. Fields has been practicing as a Family Medicine physician at Gritman’s Westside Clinic since 2021. He centers his clinical work on complex conditions including “chronic pain, hepatitis C and fibromyalgia – expanding access to care and treating patients with dignity, respect and evidence-based compassion,” according to his nomination.

Last year, Dr. Fields founded a Gritman-based support group for patients with fibromyalgia that empowers participants with the condition to support one another outside of the clinic environment.

"Family Medicine provides an amazing opportunity to interface with people in a variety of ways. We hope to continue looking for ways to innovate and provide better care for our patients,” Dr. Fields said. “I am very lucky to be surrounded by a great team and it is good to see that our work is making a difference. This award is gratifying and humbling, and I hope to keep pushing for progress in our community and throughout Idaho."

Please join us in expressing condolences to the family and friends of longtime Gritman Medical Center supporter, auxilian, and Board Member Emerita, Janie Nirk, who passed away and joined her beloved husband, Ron, on March 25, 2026.

Janie was a vibrant and valued member of our greater community in so many ways. She taught in the Potlatch School District for more than 30 years and joined the Gritman Auxiliary after retirement. She served several terms on our Board of Directors and was named a Board Member Emerita for her dedicated service.

Her support over the years allowed Gritman to invest in services, such as the Potlatch Family Clinic, outpatient dialysis, community wellness programs, and advanced technology equipment including a significant echocardiogram gift and employee match in 2019.

Janie was instrumental in raising funds for the Idaho Hospital Association's Political Action Committee (PAC) and, in 2021, she was awarded the Leader of Volunteer Excellence (LOVE) Award by the Idaho Hospital Association for her dedication and support of health care in our community.

Janie was a lifelong supporter of health and education and a dedicated advocate for our community. She made everyone feel special. We are so grateful for her generosity, kindness, witty sense of humor, and her many contributions to the Palouse and the Gritman Family over so many years.

We have some of the best people working across the Gritman Medical Center System! These are just some of the many smiling faces that greet you when you arrive for an appointment at our main hospital and clinic locations.

Every single member of the Gritman Family is crucial to our mission of providing exceptional care to improve the health of people in our communities.

As we have worked to restore our electronic systems after an organization-wide outage, these patient access teams adapted in real time - handwriting wristbands for the Emergency Department, processing information on pen and paper, and fielding phone calls at clinics closed because of the outage.

Thank you to everyone across the organization for your diligence and exceptional care.

UPDATE FOR WEDNESDAY, APRIL 8: All Gritman Clinic Phone Lines Are Active Following Systems Outage

Phone service has been restored to Gritman clinics in Kendrick, Potlatch, Troy and at Lewis-Clark State College Warrior Health following a systems outage.

All Gritman offices and clinics are operating on normal schedules as Gritman continues to bring all electronic systems back online following a cybersecurity incident.

A clinic representative will be available by phone at all Gritman locations during operating hours for patients who would like to call their preferred clinic. A list of phone numbers is available at gritman.org/contact. If you are having a medical emergency, please call 911 or go to the Gritman Medical Center Emergency Department.

Investigations into the incident show that there was no breach of the systems, no patient or secure data was compromised, no malware was successfully deployed, and that Gritman's security infrastructure worked as intended. An outside forensic investigation will be completed to determine the exact cause of the disruption.

Updated information will be posted to gritman.org as it becomes available.

LCSC Warrior Health

Patients of clinics with down phone lines may call the Gritman Downtown Clinic at 208-882-2011. If you are having a medical emergency, please call 911 or go to the Gritman Medical Center Emergency Department.

A clinic representative will continue to be available by phone at all other Gritman clinics during operating hours for patients who would like to call their preferred clinic and reschedule appointments. A list of phone numbers is available at gritman.org/contact.
