Who Is at Your Table?
All week long I felt like I was missing something — low levels of anxiety, subtle frustration. I couldn’t quite put my finger on it.
Have you ever felt that way?
I did my usual prayer, warfare prayer, meditation, and praise — but it wasn’t lifting. In the middle of a busy week, I had to ask myself, “Are you listening?”
If I’m honest, I wasn’t.
So I went back to my “spot” and asked the Lord, “What is going on?” And I waited.
After a while, Psalm 23:5 came to mind:
“You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You anoint my head with oil; My cup runs over.”
It was the first sentence that settled in my spirit:
“You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies.”
Years ago, I read Don’t Give the Enemy a Seat at Your Table by Mark Batterson. I’m sure some of what surfaced in me was influenced by that teaching — credit where credit is due.
As I meditated on Psalm 23:5, I began asking the Holy Spirit:
“Who have I invited to the table with me?”
“Lord, show me who is sitting at this table that needs to be dismissed.”
And it went something like this:
Doubt — “Doubt, you are dismissed.”
Striving — “Striving, you are dismissed.”
Confusion — “Confusion, you are dismissed.”
Then the Spirit prompted me to invite those who were missing — the ones I actually needed to dine with and be nourished by.
“As doubt is dismissed, I invite Hope in its place.”
“Confusion, you are dismissed — and I invite Order.”
“Striving, you are dismissed — and I receive Rest.”
“Dullness, you are dismissed — I invite Creativity.”
This continued for a while. I kept asking, “Who else?” And as I listened, I spoke it out loud.
During this time of meditation, I also kept seeing something unexpected: I was riding a dirt bike — which I’ve maybe done twice in my life.
In this vision, what stood out wasn’t just the speed or the bumps. It was the helmet. Dark blue. Protective. Secure.
I was riding fast, going over uneven terrain. And I recognized it — the helmet of salvation.
Had I taken it off somewhere along the way? Had subtle anxiety crept in because I wasn’t guarding my mind as intentionally as I thought?
In that moment, I put it back on.
The next day, I went to Scripture to test what I had heard.
In Psalm 78:19, the people questioned whether God could “prepare a table in the wilderness.” They doubted His provision.
Yet in 2 Samuel 17:27–29, when David was weary in the wilderness, the Lord provided an abundant table through faithful friends.
Psalm 31:19 speaks of the goodness stored up for those who fear Him.
And in John 6:50–51, Jesus declares Himself the Bread from heaven — the living bread that gives life.
A theme emerged.
There are always voices in the wilderness — voices that question, complain, and speak against God’s goodness. But there is also a table. There is provision. There is wisdom. There is living bread.
You cannot feast on the Bread of Life while entertaining doubt at the same table.
You cannot navigate rough terrain without protecting your mind.
The table has already been prepared.
The provision is already there.
The helmet is available.
The question is: who is sitting with you?
So, I ask you again — who have you invited to the table that Christ prepared for you that needs to be dismissed?
Ask the Lord. Sit with Him. Guard your mind. Dine with Wisdom.
Taste and see that the Lord your God is good.
