Camping in the forest, or spending time in the forest, a practice known as “forest bathing” or “shinrin-you”, has been shown to increase the activity and production of cancer-killing cells, specifically Natural Killer (NK) cells, by as much as 80%.

Phytoncides are antimicrobial organic compounds that trees and plants release to protect themselves from germs and insects. When humans breathe in these compounds, such as alpha-pinene and limonene, the body responds with an increased number of NK cells. These cells are a vital part of the immune system and are responsible for identifying and destroying tumor cells and virus-infected cells.

Studies have found that exposure to phytoncides can significantly increase the levels of intracellular anti-cancer proteins, including performing, granzymes A and B, and granules in, which NK cells use to kill cancer cells. One study even found that simply breathing phytoncides vaporized into a hotel room resulted in a boost of NK cell activity.

Stress hormones like cortisol can suppress the immune system and reduce the function of NK cells. Being in a forest environment has been shown to reduce cortisol levels, allowing the immune system to function more effectively.

The decrease in stress hormones and the increase in NK cells activity appear to work together. Some researchers suggests that the calming atmosphere of forests, combined with the presence of phytoncides, can stimulate both the nervous and endocrine systems to reduce stress and boost immune responses.

Amazingly, the increase in NK cells activity does not disappear as soon as you leave the forest. Studies have found that the boosted immune function can last for more than 7 days and in some cases for up to a month after a forest trip!

Research shows that the largest, oldest trees in a forest - often called “mother trees”- can identify tier kin thought chemical and hormonal signals. They use underground fungi networks to transfer nutrients like carbon, nitrogen, and water directly to their seedlings, helping them survive.
Mother trees prioritize their own offspring, offering them greater resources and protection compared to unrelated trees. The selective nurturing increases the survival and resilience of the next generation, reinforcing the cooperative intelligence of the forest.
The more we learn, the more we realize: trees don’t just grow… they listen, support, and remember.

Today we are heading into our 4Elements Retreat ~ Water Day healing activities that will include spending time with Dr Sierra Sugrue at her beautiful retreat location and naturopathic practice in Hilo. We will be learning more about Cultivating Coherence and creating a parasympathetic state for healing.

The Global Spirituality Mahotsav conference organized by the Ministry of Culture of India, brought together leaders from many global wisdom and spiritual traditions with the theme of Inner Peace to World Peace. The Meditation was attended by approximately 60,000 participants.

Hosted at the Heartfulness Institute Headquarters, Hyderabad India. It was and hosted by the Heartfulness Institutes global headquarters in Kanha Shanti Vanam, near Hyderabad India which has the world’s largest meditation center.

On Sunday 3/17/24, the day started with a Heartfulness meditation with approximately 40,000 in attendance, plus 20,000 participating on-line from around the world. The mediation was about 20-minutes long, followed by a number of emotionally moving presentations, including an award of Global Ambassador for Peacebuilding and Faith from the Secretary-General of the Commonwealth to Daaji (Kamlesh Patel), who is the Global Guide of the Heartfulness Movement. HeartMath Institute’s, Rollin McCraty, Ph.D. head of HMI’s research dept also gave a presentation.

Starting our retreat with an introduction to Resonance Medicine with a frequency sensitivity group experience tonight. Our retreat guests enjoy cellular healing support using Frequency Specific Microcurrent throughout their stay.

The ocean breezes were fantastic on the upper lanai for our opening session.
