MEET CHARLES WATTS

Charles is our dedicated Secretary at Step 1 Recovery. Charles brings a powerful personal connection to our mission, celebrating 28 years of freedom from alcohol and drugs. His journey started on Skid Row in Los Angeles, where he first worked as a social worker. His experiences there, though eye-opening, didn't immediately set him on a sober path, but they eventually inspired his commitment to giving back.

Charles was among the founders of Step 1 Recovery, sparked by a crucial discussion on how to aid homeless and disadvantaged individuals struggling with substance use disorder (SUD). His vision for the organization is to see individuals not just achieve sobriety but also transition smoothly into sober living and ultimately lead independent, fulfilling lives.

Away from his vital work with us, Charles is a retired educator, a published writer, and an active member of the Poetry Society of South Carolina. He lives by the words, "We are going to know a new freedom and a new happiness.”

Recovery takes time, which is why we require a minimum 6-month commitment at our partner facilities. Studies show that longer treatment leads to lasting sobriety, and we've seen it work firsthand.

We don't just hand out money - we walk alongside people on their journey from the streets to treatment facilities. Our volunteers meet people where they are, whether that's on a park bench, in a car, or at a homeless shelter.

We carefully vet every treatment facility we partner with to ensure they meet our high standards. These aren't just places to get clean - they're communities where people learn to live again, build relationships, and discover their worth.

Recovery is possible, but it starts with access to quality treatment. We eliminate the financial barrier so people can focus entirely on their healing journey without worrying about how they'll pay for the help they need.

MEET NICOLE CARMAN

Meet Nicole Carman, a dedicated Board Member at Step 1 Recovery Resources. Nicole brings nine years of personal recovery experience and invaluable insights from her time working with homeless women in recovery at The Serenity House, part of the Knox Area Rescue Ministries in Tennessee.

Driven by a deep-seated passion for supporting the homeless in recovery, Nicole returned to this field after realizing it’s where her passion lies. Her vision for Step 1 Recovery Resources is to ensure immediate access to necessary resources for those ready to embark on their recovery journey. She envisions our organization as a robust support system equipped with the funds and facilities to offer help without delay.

Outside of her impactful work, Nicole enjoys traveling, playing Mahjong, exploring Charleston's vibrant restaurant scene, and spending quality time with her husband, their two grown children, and their spouses. One quote she loves is, β€œI can't, God can, so I think I will let him,” and we're super thankful she's a part of the team!

Treatment plays a pivotal role in saving the lives of individuals grappling with Substance Use Disorder (SUD).

By providing a structured and comprehensive approach, treatment programs address not only the physiological aspects of addiction but also the underlying psychological and social factors contributing to the disorder.

Treatment offers a lifeline by equipping individuals with the tools to overcome cravings, manage triggers, and establish a foundation for sustained recovery.

Every person who enters recovery through our program has the potential to become someone who helps the next person. Recovery creates a ripple effect of healing that extends far beyond the individual to their families, friends, and eventually to people they'll help in the future.

Step 1 Recovery requires those we help to commit to attending a treatment facility that uses a 12-step program for a minimum of 6 months. Long-term treatment can be especially beneficial for people with substance use disorders.

While studies show that spending at least 90 days in treatment can lead to better chances of staying sober, living in a treatment facility for at least 6 months will further increase the likelihood of long-term sobriety.

Step 1 Recovery Resources originated years ago as a street initiative by a man in recovery who shared his experience, strength and hope with the most hopeless people on the streets of Charleston. He wanted them to get the help they needed to break free from the grip of Substance Use Disorder.

Since 2014, members of our organization have successfully helped over 100 people get off the streets and on the road to recovery. We created Step 1 Recovery Resources, Inc. to formalize our mission so we can assist many more souls who want recovery and need the resources to move forward.
