MEET Cyrus Kamini

Having walked the path of recovery himself, Cyrus brings authentic understanding and heart to our mission. As a Certified Peer Support Specialist, he combines lived experience with professional training to serve others on their journey to sobriety.

What began as individual outreach work evolved into something much bigger. "I was doing this work on my own and was driven by an intuitive thought to join others to this project," Cyrus shares. "I am not alone in this work anymore!" His vision? Providing as many people as possible with access to recovery solutions.

Beyond Step 1, you'll find Cyrus distributing coats to the homeless, bringing Christmas joy to children at local motels, riding, hiking, dancing at Grateful Dead shows, or enjoying a well-deserved nap. He's also navigating the exciting journey of raising his 20-year-old son through college!

One of his favorite Rumi quotes perfectly captures his philosophy: "Whoever travels without a guide needs two hundred years for a two day journey." We're grateful to have Cyrus helping guide our mission of hope and healing. πŸ™

We hope to place as many people as possible into recovery facilities at no cost to them. Those who qualify (after completing a questionnaire and an over-the-phone interview) will be placed in a South Carolina recovery facility. Placement depends on the funds Step 1 Recovery has available and the beds available at the recovery facilities.

As a local organization, we focus our efforts on residents of the tri-county area of Charleston, Berkeley and Dorchester in South Carolina. All facilities we work with are thoroughly vetted and meet our high standards and facility requirements. Helping people find their way from hopelessness to being productive members of society is what we strive for each day.

Recovery isn't just about stopping substance use - it's about learning to live a fulfilling life without it. Our partner facilities teach coping skills, build confidence, and help people discover their value and purpose in ways that support lasting sobriety.

In 2022, Charleston County had nearly 369 hospitalizations from drug and alcohol overdoses. Behind each number is a person who deserves a chance at recovery, and with your help, we can provide that chance.

MEET DEANNA ROBINSON

Deanna is another one of our amazing founding board members at Step 1 Recovery. Deanna marks her sobriety on October 28th, 2019, a personal milestone that fuels her passion for outreach and recovery support. Over the past two years, she’s worked diligently with the Jake Foundation and the Charleston Center, focusing on getting people out of homelessness and into recovery in Charleston.

Driven by her hands-on experience in community service, including key initiatives like Rockies coat drive and Toys for Good alongside Cyrus Kamini, Deanna recognized a critical gap in support for long-term treatment. This realization was pivotal in establishing Step 1 Recovery Resources. Deanna’s vision is clear: ensure that no individual is denied access to long-term recovery due to financial barriers, striving to save one life at a time.

A proud native of Charleston, Deanna channels her energy into giving back to the community that raised her, living by the creed, "Giving back what was freely given to me, saving one life at a time."

Your donation doesn't just help - it saves lives right here in Charleston, Berkeley, and Dorchester counties. With an all volunteer staff and a shoestring budget, we're able to use our donations effectively and wisely to fund as many scholarships as possible each year.

Every day we have the privilege of witnessing incredible courage as people choose recovery over addiction. It takes tremendous bravery to ask for help, and we're honored to be part of removing obstacles so that courage can lead to transformation.

The moment someone decides they want recovery is sacred, and we never want financial barriers to crush that hope. That window of willingness is precious and sometimes brief, which is why we're ready to act quickly when someone reaches out for help.

MEET NICOLE CARMAN

Meet Nicole Carman, a dedicated Board Member at Step 1 Recovery Resources. Nicole brings nine years of personal recovery experience and invaluable insights from her time working with homeless women in recovery at The Serenity House, part of the Knox Area Rescue Ministries in Tennessee.

Driven by a deep-seated passion for supporting the homeless in recovery, Nicole returned to this field after realizing it’s where her passion lies. Her vision for Step 1 Recovery Resources is to ensure immediate access to necessary resources for those ready to embark on their recovery journey. She envisions our organization as a robust support system equipped with the funds and facilities to offer help without delay.

Outside of her impactful work, Nicole enjoys traveling, playing Mahjong, exploring Charleston's vibrant restaurant scene, and spending quality time with her husband, their two grown children, and their spouses. One quote she loves is, β€œI can't, God can, so I think I will let him,” and we're super thankful she's a part of the team!

When someone completes treatment through our program, they don't just return to their old life - they build an entirely new one. They find meaningful work, repair relationships, and often become mentors to others facing similar struggles in our community.
