According to The Police Assisted Addiction and Recovery Initiative (PAARI), a program of AmeriCorps, in a report published in 2023, only 11% of people who need access to treatment for a substance use disorder receive care. Access to treatment is particularly difficult for the homeless, the unemployed, low-income, and formerly incarcerated adults.

Residing in a long-term treatment facility allows someone to practice important coping skills and become comfortable with using them once they leave. Treatment can also help someone become more productive in all areas of their life.

As they reside in the same facility and attend the same group meetings, they will also forge connections with others in the program. These relationships can be helpful when working through difficult issues, especially when people are in similar stages of recovery.

MEET Cyrus Kamini

Having walked the path of recovery himself, Cyrus brings authentic understanding and heart to our mission. As a Certified Peer Support Specialist, he combines lived experience with professional training to serve others on their journey to sobriety.

What began as individual outreach work evolved into something much bigger. "I was doing this work on my own and was driven by an intuitive thought to join others to this project," Cyrus shares. "I am not alone in this work anymore!" His vision? Providing as many people as possible with access to recovery solutions.

Beyond Step 1, you'll find Cyrus distributing coats to the homeless, bringing Christmas joy to children at local motels, riding, hiking, dancing at Grateful Dead shows, or enjoying a well-deserved nap. He's also navigating the exciting journey of raising his 20-year-old son through college!

One of his favorite Rumi quotes perfectly captures his philosophy: "Whoever travels without a guide needs two hundred years for a two day journey." We're grateful to have Cyrus helping guide our mission of hope and healing. πŸ™

Step 1 Recovery requires those we help to commit to attending a treatment facility that uses a 12-step program for a minimum of 6 months. Long-term treatment can be especially beneficial for people with substance use disorders.

While studies show that spending at least 90 days in treatment can lead to better chances of staying sober, living in a treatment facility for at least 6 months will further increase the likelihood of long-term sobriety.

We carefully evaluate each facility to ensure it aligns with our commitment to providing quality support and treatment. Each facility will have its own intake forms and acceptance requirements.

Applicants will be sent to one of these facilities depending on the availability of beds and funds. Please note that all facilities require a minimum stay of six months, with a recommended duration of nine to twelve months for optimal recovery.

MEET DEANNA ROBINSON

Deanna is another one of our amazing founding board members at Step 1 Recovery. Deanna marks her sobriety on October 28th, 2019, a personal milestone that fuels her passion for outreach and recovery support. Over the past two years, she’s worked diligently with the Jake Foundation and the Charleston Center, focusing on getting people out of homelessness and into recovery in Charleston.

Driven by her hands-on experience in community service, including key initiatives like Rockies coat drive and Toys for Good alongside Cyrus Kamini, Deanna recognized a critical gap in support for long-term treatment. This realization was pivotal in establishing Step 1 Recovery Resources. Deanna’s vision is clear: ensure that no individual is denied access to long-term recovery due to financial barriers, striving to save one life at a time.

A proud native of Charleston, Deanna channels her energy into giving back to the community that raised her, living by the creed, "Giving back what was freely given to me, saving one life at a time."

All of the treatment facilities we work with and place people in require a minimum stay of at least 6 months. If this is not a commitment you can make, we are happy to assist you with other resources and options.

Although we never want to turn anyone away who wants help, not all applicants can be accepted. Available Step 1 Recovery funds and treatment beds are a large determinant of acceptance, in addition to other criteria, such as detox before admittance for certain substances.

As a local organization, we focus our efforts on residents of the tri-county area of Charleston, Berkeley and Dorchester in South Carolina. Please consider donating to help fund our mission - no donation is too small. - https://www.step1recoveryresources.org/donate πŸ’™
