MEET NICOLE CARMAN

Meet Nicole Carman, a dedicated Board Member at Step 1 Recovery Resources. Nicole brings nine years of personal recovery experience and invaluable insights from her time working with homeless women in recovery at The Serenity House, part of the Knox Area Rescue Ministries in Tennessee.

Driven by a deep-seated passion for supporting the homeless in recovery, Nicole returned to this field after realizing it’s where her passion lies. Her vision for Step 1 Recovery Resources is to ensure immediate access to necessary resources for those ready to embark on their recovery journey. She envisions our organization as a robust support system equipped with the funds and facilities to offer help without delay.

Outside of her impactful work, Nicole enjoys traveling, playing Mahjong, exploring Charleston's vibrant restaurant scene, and spending quality time with her husband, their two grown children, and their spouses. One quote she loves is, β€œI can't, God can, so I think I will let him,” and we're super thankful she's a part of the team!

MEET PAM HRICIK

Pam is a key member of our board at Step 1 Recovery. Pam just had her 29 year sobriety date on Sunday, March 16th! CONGRATULATIONS PAM!!! πŸŽ‰

Pam is deeply committed to supporting others on their journey to sobriety. She's driven by a desire to ensure that no one is left without support due to lack of resources.

A Charleston resident for 26 years, Pam has been a vibrant contributor to the local nonprofit scene. She’s made significant impacts, from her early days volunteering with the United Way’s 211 Helpline to her dynamic leadership as President of the Village Repertory Theatre Company, where she spearheaded numerous fundraising efforts. Pam also co-founded Keys for Hope, which generated nearly $100,000 for One80 Place, a local homeless shelter.

After recently selling her special event business, Pam now dedicates her time to her art as a pressed flower artist and enjoys traveling with her husband, embracing the next chapter of life as an empty nester.

According to The Police Assisted Addiction and Recovery Initiative (PAARI), a program of AmeriCorps, in a report published in 2023, only 11% of people who need access to treatment for a substance use disorder receive care. Access to treatment is particularly difficult for the homeless, the unemployed, low-income, and formerly incarcerated adults.

Residing in a long-term treatment facility allows someone to practice important coping skills and become comfortable with using them once they leave. Treatment can also help someone become more productive in all areas of their life.

As they reside in the same facility and attend the same group meetings, they will also forge connections with others in the program. These relationships can be helpful when working through difficult issues, especially when people are in similar stages of recovery.

MEET Cyrus Kamini

Having walked the path of recovery himself, Cyrus brings authentic understanding and heart to our mission. As a Certified Peer Support Specialist, he combines lived experience with professional training to serve others on their journey to sobriety.

What began as individual outreach work evolved into something much bigger. "I was doing this work on my own and was driven by an intuitive thought to join others to this project," Cyrus shares. "I am not alone in this work anymore!" His vision? Providing as many people as possible with access to recovery solutions.

Beyond Step 1, you'll find Cyrus distributing coats to the homeless, bringing Christmas joy to children at local motels, riding, hiking, dancing at Grateful Dead shows, or enjoying a well-deserved nap. He's also navigating the exciting journey of raising his 20-year-old son through college!

One of his favorite Rumi quotes perfectly captures his philosophy: "Whoever travels without a guide needs two hundred years for a two day journey." We're grateful to have Cyrus helping guide our mission of hope and healing. πŸ™
