MYTH: People with dementia can’t meaningfully engage or connect anymore.

FACT: Even in later stages of dementia, many people continue to respond to music and connect emotionally with others.

👉 Music therapy activates widespread brain networks, including areas linked to emotion and autobiographical memory.
👉 Music therapy reduces agitation and behavioural symptoms.
👉 Music therapy increases engagement and social interaction.

Dementia affects memory — it does not erase emotion, identity, or the capacity for connection. Music therapy can help access the strengths and the person who is there. 💛

While a “hello song” might not be appropriate in every setting or with every client, they’re very useful in our classroom groups, for exactly the reasons stated here! Lets everyone know “it’s time for some music!” 🎶

Most of our music therapy sessions begin with a hello song. There are several reasons for this. It sets a tone for the session, establishing structure and starting a routine right off the bat. It also provides an opportunity for instant engagement as soon as the clients enter the room - we use the same hello song each time, and everyone gets to know it well (we've even had clients sing it without any help from us). It also provides an opportunity for us to check in with our clients and give them a chance to express themselves in a familiar environment. It promotes interaction and social skills, particularly in groups but also in one-on-one sessions. Additionally, it can be a lot of fun, especially if you include some movement.

Picture this: you’re co-treating with an amazing speech pathologist, and mid-session the client wants to “make a cake” with purple kinetic sand. As the MT, your mental and musical wheels start spinning—-how can I integrate music into this idea?

The result? A quick search found “Make a Cake” by Sylvie Simhon on Spotify (check it out, it’s catchy), and my tambourine became a cookie (cake) cutter. Voila, a star cake!! I 🩷 co-treating!

The repertoire for our senior adult groups falls right in line with my own personal favorites! Today’s game was to see if we could come up with musicians’ names starting with all letters of the alphabet. Look at how many we found!

So many of the children we work with are very reliant on routine, and depend on visual representations of each part of their day. We love it when teachers incorporate music therapy into the visual schedule for the school day, so the students know what to expect 🎶🥰
