We want to say a heartfelt thank you to our citizens for supporting us with Prop 1.

If you haven’t heard by now Prop 1 passed! With this support we can ensure that we have an Engine and Ambulance staffed at station 3.

Here is what you can expect to see next:
Interview and offer positions off of our current hiring list.
Send the new hires to Fire Academy which is tentatively scheduled for a January start (Provided all the interviews, offers, background checks and psychological assessments are completed and vetted in time)
After the 3 month academy, provided all the recruits graduate, finish the on boarding process and 3rd rider training.

So there is a lot of work to do, but our goal is to get Station 3 staffed up by summer or fall of 2026.

Again, thank you! Without your support this would not have been possible!!

Ballots are due today! Make sure to support us by voting yes on Prop 1! Help us better serve you! Prop 1 will increase staffing, allowing us to no longer cross staff the Engine and Ambulance at Station 3. This will reduce response times and increase our ability to get 4 firefighters on scene within 5 minutes to over 80% of the city!

This sight is increasingly common, all three Medic units for the city assigned on incidents at the same time. This equates to half of the city’s fire department being unavailable. Prop 1 aims to add staffing, allowing us to ensure we have two Engines and one Ladder staffed. This added staffing would decrease response times throughout the city and ensure that the closest unit would be available to respond to your emergency!

Ballots are due tomorrow, if you haven’t voted yet please support us so we can better serve you!

We want to announce that due to our minimum daily staff of 11, anyone dressed up as a firefighter for Halloween will be required to fill a shift at their closest fire station!

All jokes aside, we hope you all have a safe and happy Halloween!

If you haven’t voted yet, you still have the opportunity to show us your support on Prop 1! Help us better serve you by adding more firefighters per day!

The 11 firefighters and Paramedics in the photo above shows the minimum daily staffing level for your Mount Vernon Fire. The 11 people staff one dedicated Engine, one dedicated Ladder two dedicated Ambulances, one cross staffed Engine / Ambulance and one Battalion Chief. These units cover the 13 square mile city of 36,000 residents and provide the primary EMS transport service for numerous surrounding communities. These 6 units respond to 8,500 incidents per year as well as completing thousands of businesses inspections and keeping our skills sharp with thousands of hours of continuing training.

A yes vote on Prop 1 would add two more firefighters to this photo. They would staff an Engine and increase the level of fire protection for the city, allowing us to better handle the average 23 incident responses per day.

On Saturday October 25th, your Mount Vernon Firefighters and Paramedics, with automatic aid from neighboring Fire Departments responded to a working residential fire. Battalion 1, staffed with 1 and Ladder 125, staffed with 2, arrived and began extinguishing the fire. The Station 3 crew, of 2, was in Medic 139 transporting a patient from a previous incident. Medic 129, who would normally arrive with Ladder 125, was also transporting a patient from a previous incident. This means that 125 had to wait for the crews from Station 1 (Engine 111 and Medic 119, both staffed with 2) to initiate a search. During that search a victim was found. While Medic 119 finished extinguishing the fire the officer from 125 and the 2 person crew from 111 removed the victim. By that time Medic 129 had finished their transport and arrived to receive a pulseless victim. Crews initiated CPR and transported. The victim had pulses back on arrival at the hospital and has since been transferred to Harborview in critical condition. It’s worth noting here, that 139 completed their transport and responded in their Ambulance, Engine 131 was unavailable the entire time of this incident.

This incident highlights the importance of Prop 1. Prop 1 aims to add staffing so we can end the cross staffing model at Station 3. If Station 3 was not cross staffed, Engine 131 would have been available and would have arrived minutes before the crews from Station 1. In our business, seconds can often mean the difference between life and death; a delay of minutes is an eternity.

We are thankful that, at the time of this post, this incident wasn’t fatal. Please share this, and vote Yes to increase the level of fire protection for our City!

Did you know that Medic 139, the Ambulance at Station 3, has one the highest unit utilization times for the city, despite running an average of 3 fewer calls a day compared to the units at Stations 1 and 2. In short, this means that the calls the Ambulance goes on take longer from 911 to back in service. This is an important metric because Station 3 is cross staffed. So when the Ambulance is in a call there is no Engine staffed. This results in longer response times and inadequate coverage.

Prop 1 would add 6 Firefighters and Paramedics, ensuring we would be able to staff an Engine and Ambulance at Fire Station 3.

We’re often asked why the Fire Engine responds to medical calls with the Ambulance. There’s several reasons why both units respond but it all comes down to providing a rapid response and high level of care!

Having both units on scene allows us to have more manpower and quickly evaluate the patient. In the event of a critical patient, the Ambulance can take members from the Fire Engine to the hospital with them to continue to provide critical care to sick patients!

Currently, Fire Station 3 is only staffed with 2 people, meaning every medical call in Station 3’s response area requires an Engine from Station 1 or Ladder from Station 2 to respond with the Ambulance from Station 3. A yes vote on Prop 1 would increase the staffing at Station 3 to 4 people, ensuring the Engine and Ambulance are both staffed!

Did you know that the staffing level for Mount Vernon hasn’t changed since 1993. In that timeframe the call volume for the department has more than doubled, we’ve added a third Fire Station and assumed EMS transport responsibilities for the city and surrounding fire departments. The minimum daily staffing level is currently at 11. This translates to:
One Engine Company staffed with 2
One Ladder (Quint) Company staffed with 2
Two Medic Ambulances each staffed with 2
One cross staffed Engine/Medic Ambulance staffed with 2
One Battalion Chief
The city averages 23 incident responses per day, and over 80% of those incidents overlap, meaning the closest unit is often already on an incident, resulting in longer response times. With current staffing levels we can only get 4 Firefighters to the scene within 4 minutes for half of the city. This number is critical because Washington State Law prohibits Firefighters from entering a hazardous environment without a minimum of 4 on scene.

Voting yes on Prop 1 would add 6 Firefighters and Paramedics, allowing your Mount Vernon Firefighters and Paramedics to stop cross staffing units at Fire Station 3. In plain English it would mean a Medic Ambulance and an Engine Company staffed 24/7/365. The added staffing would allow us to get 4 Firefighters to the scene within 4 minutes to 83% of the city, a 33% increase. It also adds “depth” to our responses, meaning the closer units are more likely to be available during the overlapping incidents.
