Here are some types of employers and specific companies that will hire someone with a CPC‑A (Certified Professional Coder – Apprentice) credential — i.e., you’ve passed the exam but may still be working toward full experience.
Typical Employer Types
Hospitals: A large and consistent employer for medical coders.
Physician practices: Medical offices of varying sizes need coders to manage billing and records.
Outpatient clinics: Similar to physician practices, these facilities handle a wide range of services requiring coding.
Third-party billing companies: These companies specialize in handling medical coding and billing for multiple clients, creating many entry-level positions.
Remote work: Many of these employers also offer remote opportunities, which require a reliable computer and internet connection.
Health insurance companies/payers — coding quality, audits, denials, analytics roles.
Coding & revenue cycle management firms / outsourcing firms — they often hire coders (including entry-level/“apprentice” coders) and provide training or contract placements.
Remote/virtual coding positions — the CPC-A credential is accepted in many remote coder job postings.
Example Companies / Employers
Here are some specific employers who have posted jobs that mention CPC or CPC-A or “entry level coder” credentials:
The Judge Group – a staffing/recruiting firm that places coding/audit staff and has been cited in forums as hiring CPC-A coders. Send your resume to: mpress@judge.com
Payer/insurance and large health systems also: job listings in Indiana for “Medical Coding Appeals Analyst” or “Inpatient Coding Auditor” include CPC/CPC-A credentials.
Tips for Finding and Landing These Jobs
On your résumé highlight the CPC-A credential and stress that you passed the exam, which signals knowledge of coding even if you’re still gaining experience.
Search for “entry-level medical coder”, “coding apprentice”, “coding specialist (CPC-A)”, “remote coder CPC-A” etc. Many listings include CPC-A or accept “new coder” status.
Be open to stepping-in through adjacent roles (e.g., charge entry, coding support, auditing assistant) that can lead into full coding roles.
Coding Clarified
Networking with staffing firms that focus on health information management/coding may open contract-to-hire opportunities.
Emphasize remote work willingness — many remote coder roles are open to CPC-A.
