We’ve heard that the human brain can process up to 60,000 thoughts in a day. We don’t know how accurate that number is. For starters, how do you even count thoughts? Does the counting of a thought count as a thought?

Anyway, what we do know is that when you’re trying to focus, even one intrusive thought is too many. Particularly during times of stress or when we’re feeling pressured to get stuff done.

If you’ve ever struggled with a too-active brain, this content from our library might help. It includes some interesting insights and tips for using mindfulness to quiet an overexuberant brain and improve wellbeing. (It also gave us the 60K thoughts in a day statistic we used at the start of this post, so, cherry on top!)

How was your holiday last week? The 4th of July—and other fireworks-heavy holidays—are always a mixed bag for the Concern team. We’re all in on the cookouts and parties and love the celebration and the spectacle of a professional fireworks show—especially when timed to some rousing music.

The non-stop neighborhood fireworks are a different story, though. Here in our city, the cracking and popping can go on nightly for hours this time of year.

According to the World Health Organization, sounds as quiet as 40dB can disrupt healthy sleep patterns. Given that the average loudness of consumer fireworks ranges between 115 and 120dB and professional firework booms can reach up to 175dB, fireworks-heavy holidays can wreak havoc on our sleep habits.

If, like some of us, the holiday (or everyday stress) has you struggling with a restful nighttime routine, you might find this science-based article about maximizing sleep cycles helpful. And, if you’re a Concern member, check out the 7 Days of Sleep program from our guided mindfulness partner, eM Life, for more help with developing healthy sleep habits. https://www.concernhealth.com/resources/article/sleep-cycle-science/

Have you noticed that political discussions have been getting more heated and, well, shouty recently? We have. Both personally and professionally.

Personally, we all have that one uncle and that other in-law who’ve always bickered over political party affiliation at family gatherings. Increasingly, though, what used to be mostly friendly sparring has turned into full-on shouting matches.

Professionally, we’ve seen a similar rise in politically related workplace conflict. According to recent SHRM surveys:
–– More than 2/3 of U.S. employees have experienced uncivil behavior at work in the last month.
–– 47% of organizations listed political disagreements as one of their top challenges one year after the last presidential election.

The rise in tension is understandable. Election cycles have become so long that they’ve blended into what feels like an endlessly traumatic loop. The stakes are high, so emotions are, too.

We find that when politics comes up, it’s helpful to remember that most of us want the same basic things—safety, security, fairness, and to be seen. That’s true, no matter which party is on our ballot.

If we can recall that common ground, it makes it easier to discuss how to get there in a more civil and respectful way. https://lnkd.in/gUiN9g78

For our HR and workplace leader friends, this recent supervisor tipsheet from our library has some solid pointers for defusing political conflicts at work. https://lnkd.in/g7nC3JnT

A workplace crisis plan is mandatory, especially when today’s employees increasingly fear disruptive events. 78% of Americans are concerned about a public health crisis at work, and a majority are worried about cyberattacks, workplace violence, and other critical incidents. It is crucial for employers to not only have a crisis response plan, but to update it, test it, and make sure employees know about it. For more insights, visit https://concernhealth.com.

We’ve been thinking about diversity a lot, mainly because it’s always an important topic to our customers, but also because the first half of the year is filled with observances and celebrations of diversity. February is Black History Month. April is Arab American Heritage Month. May encompasses Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month and Jewish American Heritage Month, and June is LGBTQ Pride Month.

One of our team members mentioned that, at a recent graduation ceremony, they looked around and realized they were sitting in a stadium with all the above-mentioned cultures and then some—everyone, together, in one spot, sharing a universally understood and joyful occasion.

We can’t help but think that they were, quite literally, sitting in the Great American Melting Pot.

Melting pots make us think of food and how all those families left that common experience for smaller graduation parties, where they likely celebrated with a breathtaking diversity of foods, music, traditions, and languages.

Embracing diversity can be extremely beautiful and rewarding, nuanced and challenging at the same time. It can help us connect with any new and unfamiliar person or culture by thinking of the many things we have in common – like the joy of watching our children graduate and our hopes and fears for their future happiness. Content like this from Concern's library can also help overcome roadblocks to cultural understanding.

Now, with those deep thoughts out of the way, we’re back to thinking about graduation party food. What’s your favorite summer celebration dish?

It’s time to rethink management “training” because today’s managers are continually being asked to handle the unexpected. Hybrid work environments, talent shortages, and employee mental health issues are just a handful of the challenges facing modern managers. It’s critical for employers to provide leadership “training” that helps managers successfully navigate these complexities to avoid creating others. For more insights, visit concernhealth.com.

Extreme weather patterns across the central U.S. have dominated the news cycle for a few weeks now, with TV meteorologists repeating a recurring theme: that monster “once in a lifetime” storm cells are presenting multiple times in a single season.

Nearly 68 million Americans were at risk from extreme weather this past Memorial Day weekend alone, and the estimated cost of damage since mid-March has already surged into the tens of billions of dollars.

That has us thinking about the aftermath and the hard work that begins after the news crews capture their footage of flooded streets and shattered homes and move on. There is the practical work and cost involved in rebuilding property and communities. But what about the emotional damage and the work that needs to be done to heal broken spirits?

Of course, physical safety and shelter must come first, but It’s also important to care for our mental and emotional wellbeing in times of crisis.

We thought this tip sheet about practical and financial steps to take after a disaster from the Concern library may be helpful. In addition to having service and benefit suggestions specific to Concern members and families, it also contains information and links that can be helpful to anyone in disaster-affected areas.

While self-help apps and text-based counseling are valuable, some employees with mental health issues prefer seeing another human being. Compassion, collaboration, empathy, non-verbal cues, and nuance are just a few of the advantages of face-to-face mental health support. It’s critical for employers to offer a mental health solution that offers technology and the human touch. Visit https://concernhealth.com for more insights.

Back in January Elmo—yes, that Elmo—posted this on social media, “Elmo is just checking in! How is everybody doing?” Some 215M views and 45K responses later, the consensus was that everybody was not doing so great.

People were very candid in their responses, sharing their troubles dealing with relationships and finances and overwhelming feelings of exhaustion, loneliness, anxiety, and the general heaviness of the world.

Now, we know this is about a Muppet on social media. It’s not a scientifically designed survey with clearly defined results and metrics. Still, it reflects something we at Concern see in our work every day and something we believe we’ve all been feeling, that many of us aren’t OK.

This message is particularly timely, seeing as we’re halfway through Mental Health Awareness Month. It’s a reminder that it’s always a good time to think about our mental health, not just once a year each May.

Up to 1/3rd of adults who begin therapy don’t return for another visit, so the right employee-counselor match has never been more important. When implementing mental health support services, employers should seek a partner that has experience recognizing human complexities, subtleties, needs – and even unspoken concerns. When implementing an employee mental health solution, it’s important to look beyond counseling and address the stressors behind the need. Factors such as finding day care or elder care, financial/legal challenges, and workplace conflicts can all play a role in an employee’s emotional state. For better outcomes, employers should look for a partner that addresses all aspects of mental health. Find more insights at concernhealth.com.

Raise your hand if your parents ever forgot to pick you up from school or practice and you had to use a pay phone to call them. Bonus points if you learned how to call collect when you didn’t have any quarters.

The fact that technology evolved to virtually eliminate this scenario is pretty mind-blowing; especially considering the end of the pay phone scenario wasn’t that long ago.

When you stop to think about it, it is equally mind-blowing how our phones put so many things in the palms of our hands. Movies, games, books, music, travel, food…and that’s saying nothing about video calls and messaging. It’s pretty incredible.

Like anything, though, healthy technology use—or more specifically, device use—requires moderation. Otherwise, the ugly side of the internet and social media (see anxiety, low self-esteem, and distraction) can start to creep in.

If you’d like some tips on healthy technology boundaries, check out this article from our library. It outlines some ways you can combat the negatives and maintain a healthy balance.

And rest assured, none of them include going back to pay phones. https://www.concernhealth.com/resources/article/social-media-keep-the-social-in-and-the-stress-out/
