Hi! I am so happy you are visiting my site and am excited to share with you my passion for reading!
Chances are, you’re here because you have a child who is struggling with reading or you would like to find some advanced training for your child who excels but has been slowed down due to issues related to the COVID crisis.
Maybe you have a young child who is trying so hard but can’t seem to put sounds together to make words or words together to make a sentence. This process may be slow and tedious and your child is growing increasingly frustrated while you, the parent, are growing increasingly concerned that maybe there’s a more serious problem.
Or maybe you have a child that can read but doesn’t seem to be able to understand and remember what he or she reads. As he or she gets older and the academic load becomes more demanding, you’re seeing difficulties that hadn’t been apparent in years past. Now, somewhere there’s a disconnect and everything you and the teachers have tried doesn’t seem to be helping.
I get it! I have seen the exasperation and worry on kindergartner’s as well as teenager’s parents’ faces. Over the past 8 years, I have helped children with these learning struggles to have success in the classroom and develop a love of reading!
A little about my background...
I have a BS in Elementary Education and have taught both first and second grade. I have taught in public school, Classical Christian school and homeschool. Additionally, I have a M.Ed. with a concentration in Educational Therapy. I am a member of the International Dyslexia Association and a certified Dyslexia Practitioner with Wilson Reading System. Wilson uses an Orton-Gillingham approach to address reading struggles. I encourage you to research their program at https://www.wilsonlanguage.com/parents/.
“Wilson’s programs feature research-based, systematic, and multisensory structured language curricula to help every student succeed. Students learn to read step-by-step, starting with the basic structure and rules of our language, then building to more advanced lessons over time. We have seen our programs transform students’ lives by giving them the tools to read and write, building confidence, and empowering them to achieve their dreams.”
So, where do we begin to address these issues?
Your child will first be assessed using two standardized diagnostic instruments: The Woodcock Johnson Diagnostic Reading Battery and Wilson’s Word Identification and Spelling Test (WIST). I also like to use the Burns & Roe Informal Reading Inventory to assess your child’s reading level. Once I have these results, I prepare a comprehensive report and schedule a conference with you to discuss my findings. If intervention is needed, you have the option to schedule your child for one-on-one, individualized reading therapy sessions 2-4 times per week. Length of time this therapy is necessary will vary; you and your child should plan on a minimum commitment of one school year.
And what is the cost?
Assessments, Report and Conference: $300*
One-on-One Reading Therapy: $60 per session**
Group Sessions: may be available (based on interest; 3-5 students) for a reduced rate
*Due at time of testing; no obligation to continue with therapy
**Due at the beginning of each month; missed sessions due to illness, inclement weather, etc. will be rescheduled.
Other Services Offered (No assessment required for these sessions; sessions per week will vary depending on personal preference)
Sessions for homeschoolers whose parents would like assistance teaching their Pre-K-2nd grade student the phonics and literacy skills necessary to grow into a strong reader.
Summer enrichment or review to help your child retain their reading skills between grades or give them a “leg up” for the next school year.
Location
All therapy sessions will be in my home, 2020 Jose Way, Murfreesboro (in Celebration Cove subdivision, behind Oakland Middle School).
Please Note: If Covid-19 guidelines restrict meeting in person, online therapy through Zoom will be available; however, you may also choose to suspend services until restrictions are lifted if you prefer.
