🔎 Research results reveal more than one-third of ECMO patients alive five years later and most rate their quality of life as satisfactory.

“Despite slight-to-moderate impairment of mobility, impairment of usual activities, and pain or discomfort; HRQoL was rated satisfactory after 5 years, showing values approaching that of the Belgian general population. The majority of patients returned to employment; however, the degree to which they did so varied.”

👉 If outcomes stabilize after the first year, early phases are key... now is the time to invest in how ECMO programs select patients, train teams, and plan care beyond the ICU.

🔦 Overhead ICU lighting can hide things the human eye can’t afford to miss. A focused beam can reveal microbubbles, tiny clots, fibrin strands, color shifts, and even hairline cracks; issues that can escalate fast if not caught early.

That’s why ECMO Specialists often do a full flashlight circuit check at the start of every shift, during hourly rounds, and anytime alarms or patient changes suggest something might be off. It’s one of those small habits that dramatically increases patient safety.

⏱️ A few seconds with a flashlight = early detection, fewer surprises, and safer ECMO care.
