February 24, 1811, Daniel Alexander Payne was
born in Charleston, South Carolina. Payne played a pivotal role in
shaping the African Methodist Episcopal Church (AME),
emphasizing the importance of education and ministerial
training. He served as the sixth bishop of the AME Church for
over four decades, from 1852 to 1893.

Additionally, Payne was instrumental in the founding of
Wilberforce University in Ohio in 1856. In 1863, the AME Church
acquired the university and appointed Payne as its leader,
making him the first African-American president of a college in
the United States. He held this position until 1877, leaving a
lasting legacy in the realm of education and religious leadership.

James Baskett in Song of the South, 1946.
James Baskett, the first black man to win an Academy Award,
was born in Indianapolis, Indiana on February 16, 1904. Baskett
studied pharmacology as a young man but gave it up to pursue
an acting career.
In 1945, he auditioned for a bit part voicing one of the animals in
the new Disney feature film Song of the South (1946), based on
the Uncle Remus stories by Joel Chandler Harris. Walt Disney
was impressed with Baskett's talent and hired him on the spot
for the lead role of Uncle Remus.
Baskett was also given the voice role of Brer Fox, one of the
film's animated antagonists, and also filled in as the main
animated protagonist, Brer Rabbit, in one sequence. This was
one of the first Hollywood portrayals of a black actor as a non-
comic character in a leading role in a film meant for general
audiences.

Isaac Burns Murphy was one of the greatest jockeys in American Thoroughbred racing history. Born to free Black parents, he grew up in Lexington, Kentucky, after his father—a Union soldier—died in a Confederate prison camp. Murphy began racing in 1875 and became famous for his “grandstand finish,” pacing his horse for a strong final charge while riding upright and rarely using the whip.

His 1879 Travers Stakes victory brought national recognition. Murphy rode in the Kentucky Derby 11 times and became the first three-time winner (1884, 1890, 1891), as well as the first jockey to win consecutive Derbies. He also won the American Derby four times, making him one of the highest-paid athletes of his era.

Despite later rumors affecting his career, Murphy’s impact on horse racing remains historic. He died of pneumonia on February 12, 1896.
