I am a non-profit organization and rely on help by good animal loving people like you. Welcome to our page where we are dedicated to saving and caring for feral felines in our community through the power of education and the practice of TNR. My name is Rusti, and I have built a little bit of kitty heaven. I am dedicated to saving as many ferals as I can and am passionate about educating others on how to combat the astronomical numbers of feral cats world wide ! I release most ferals I trap but will keep all kittens, pregnant mommas and sick or injured kits. The kits I have at my facility now are ones that never left once released or have a lower survival rate in the swamp, so I have integrated them into my existing colony. It's hard work and it's not cheap, but I do what I can with what I've got. How did she find her way into downtown ? I was looking all over for her, and then I remembered she had told me she had a craving for her favorite breakfast. So I was headed towards her favorite market and spotted her in the middle of the road! " I've had cravings before too, but this was a little extreme " I said to her. All this for some breakfast ??? Yes she replied..... I'll do anything for some ' mice-crispies. '. 😸 🐭 😂

I’m not even gonna say anything to spoil it. We have had some seriously cold weather down here in the swamp. Florida even had snow today! It’s crazy! I’m always worried about my free roamers not having a covered space to take shelter in even though I know they know the swamp like the back of their paw and know where to go. But guess who just walked right in to the deck enclosure when I open the door? 😳

It never fails to happen. Any time I have a free roaming kit, I worry about protecting them from all sorts of weather related crises. From hurricanes to flooding to brutal temperatures, I worry. That being said though, they always seem to know where to go and how to survive. I had a huge dog crate ready for Ozzer if I could get him inside. I made sure he had a big dinner and ample places to take shelter outside. But as usual, nothing I provided was good enough for him. I know he has a hidey-hole somewhere out in the swamp. I have seen it rain so hard that it would choke a toad and these kits come sauntering out from the swamp dry as a bone. Still... I worry. Tonight is supposed to be colder than it was last night. We reached 29* !! I will once again try to bring him in, but can't guarantee it will happen. He emerged this morning just in time to catch the pleasure of the warming morning sun. How are all of you surviving ??? Everybody staying warm ?? 😼

It may look a bit ' j***y ', but it's what I've had to do to keep my swamp kits warm. These are photos of their sleeping quarters, and inside the main enclosure as well as on the lanai. You can see the stack of blankets that I had which were ALL used. I got some mylar sheets to line the boxes and beds too. We should be over the wicked temps in about 3 days, so I can deal with the junkiness as long as my kits are comfortable. I cannot believe that we may see flurries and temps below 30 ** !! WoW !

They are actually suggesting that we could see SNOW in parts of our area ! As much as I love the snow I REALLY don't want the cold weather that could bring it ! I love cool & crisp days but we have hard freeze warnings for the next 2 nights !! I have not turned my heat on in over 15 years. This is crazy !! My kits are not going to know how to handle this but I will tell you that all day yesterday and all day today I am preparing. I wish I had a lot more tiny covered beds ( b/c they hold the heat better ) but instead I am creating a dozen box-spots. My dear friend Kerry brought me dozens of blankets and boxes that I am taping up and filling for the kits that don't like to come up to the house. I'm not using straw b/c the kits will all be under roof and not get wet. Kerry also brought over a ' bed-jet ' which blows warm air which I will place on the lanai tonight. Sweet old Mazzie and Dingus have been brought inside whether they like it or not. They are too old and frail to be out even with the winter provisions. I even had to pull out a pair of blue jeans !! I haven't worn blue jeans in over a decade !!!!! NOT ready for temps in the 20's and wind gusts possibly up to 40mph!! EEK !!!!! 😲

While Bart may not be free roaming anymore, that hasn't taken away his never-ending focus on the grounds and knowing everything that happens around here. If you look closely in the background, you will see a black dot in the yard. Thats Ozzie !! Bart and Walnut were on the hutch just chilling a bit when Bart suddenly sat straight up and honed in onto Ozzer. ( Thats he's nick ;) )
He didn't take his eyes off of him until he was no longer seen from Barts advantage. The kits always alert me to anything in the yard, but sometimes many of them ignore things or are too lazy to even look..... but Bart never fails. Like a guard on duty, trained not to budge or back down, Bart is always there.

Many of you know that we are in the swamps of South Florida and do not experience cold weather like most of you do. I filmed this a couple days ago when we had some really cold evenings, but as I mentioned, I tend to go overboard. We are about to experience the coldest temperatures we have seen in over 15 years in a couple of days! I went to our local supermarket today and collected some cardboard boxes for some added protection. We are not used to temperatures below 70 in the swamp. Laugh as you may , every state has different temperatures and climates. We are just not used to it. I enjoy the change when it comes to temperatures. I much prefer not to sweat and have mosquitoes stick to my skin, but I’d rather it just be in the 50s or 60s instead of the 20s that we are expecting this coming weekend! EEK !!
