Cafe Gilly: I applaud your efforts of inclusion and am grateful beyond measure!

3 years ago today I happened to come across a post from the City of Charlotte, TN about a building for rent in the Charlotte square.

The next morning we peeked through the windows and I began envisioning what my little coffee shop would look like. I really didn’t think we would have a chance, but we tried anyways. A little over a week later we found out this little building would be the future home of Cafe Gilly.

We had so many setbacks opening our cafe. There were days we felt like we would never open and that we would never catch a break. The cafe is such a huge part of my life now and it’shard to imagine what life would be like without it.

This past year has been amazing and we are finally able to move forward and focus on our mission and inspiration behind opening Cafe Gilly. We are beyond grateful for our customers, our community and the City of Charlotte for the continued support.

For those that do not know our story, the inspiration for opening Cafe Gilly was to provide a safe, welcoming and inclusive environment for our employees, community members and customers and to increase the awareness of the potential of individual with disabilities in the workforce. Cafe Gilly was named after one of the owner’s former high school classmates whom she supported in adaptive PE, Special Olympics and Best Buddies. During this time, the dream of providing a supportive environment for individuals with disabilities to work came to life. We are excited to be partnering with a local organization and will soon be adding some new members to the Cafe Gilly team.

Multiple Sclerosis affects many of those we love and serve, personally and professionally. Nick and I have donated to this worthy cause at the request of our friend’s birthday wish today to support the National Multiple Sclerosis Foundation.

This is awesome! A Vertical Platform Lift/stair lift combo for outdoor use. Hopefully the transfer is protected with a fall arrester. Regardless, this is enabling at the very least.

Inclusion is so great for everyone!

In 1991, 18-year-old Alexa started her very first job at KFC. She was shy, wearing a slightly oversized uniform, and proudly pinned on her name tag. Born with Down syndrome, Alexa knew many people had low expectations—but she also knew her worth.

To her, this wasn’t just a fast food job. It was a chance to prove that kindness, consistency, and hard work are more powerful than any label. She made customers feel seen, brought treats for her coworkers, mentored new staff, and became the heart of her workplace.

After 33 years of dedication, Alexa is now retiring with pride. Her name has come to symbolize loyalty, strength, and inclusion in the workplace. She didn’t just clock in—she changed the culture and left a legacy of love and employee empowerment.

Alexa’s journey is a beautiful reminder that diversity hiring, inclusive employment, and supporting special needs workers isn’t just good policy—it’s good for the soul.

Let’s celebrate champions like Alexa who make the world a better place—one shift, one smile, one heart at a time.

People with developmental and intellectual disabilities have had to fight to be seen as the rightful owners of their own lives, their own space. When you enter someone’s home as a support worker, you’re not clocking into your environment, you’re walking into theirs. That’s sacred.

It’s not about being polite, it’s about being person-centred in the deepest way. Shoes off if they ask. Quiet if they need it. Ask before moving things. Listen before doing. It’s their home, their rules, their life.

Dignity doesn’t need a policy. It needs practice.
