"In the world that is ever changing, the ability to adapt is an invaluable asset." This was the first sentence from my residency application essay. I think that this sentiment is especially true in the world on healthcare. If you can adapt quickly to changes, then you will always have value. I think an even better quality to have it the ability to push change. Don't just adapt to innovation be at the forefront of innovation. When you can do both you become a force to be reckoned with. The best example of this principle that comes to mind is water. Water can take the shape of any container that it is placed in. However, it is also the most erosive force on the planet, responsible for continually changing Earth's landscape. In the words of Bruce Lee, "Be like water." ,

For me, one of the benefits of growing up poor is that I learned how to do everything myself. We didn't have the convenience of being able to pay someone to come fix non necessity items if they broke and so it was my job to fix them. Eventually I grew to to dislike paying to have people do things I felt could do myself. I'm not saying that you have to do everything yourself. Some services require specialized education and training that would be impractical for you undertake. However, it is nice to not be dependant on someone else to do it for you, or to at least understand how things work so that you can't be taken advantage of. You be surprised how much is being charged for simple things. You'd also be surprised how much you are capable of doing on your own. I've learned how to do auto mechanincs, photography, taxes, business setup, graphic design, and scoial media management just to name a few. Don't pay for services because you have to, pay for them because you want to.

And if you don't know, now you know. Professional athletes seem like they make so much money, that is until you compare their earnings to that of the team owners. In a system where the game NEEDS them to survive they are paid only a fraction of what they bring in. There are numerous parallels between the medical system and professional sports. These include but are not limited to the way MATCH is errily similar to a sports drafts, down to the way physicians and athletes only receive a fraction of the total revenue that they are primarily responsible for bringing in.

Let's do the math. 4 years of college, 4 years of medical school, 3-8 years of residency and possibly fellowship plus outrageous student loan debt just to be on another person's clock? In the words on N'Jadaka, son of Prince N'Jobu, "Nah." Of course, if you like it, I love it but, if you're anything like me you probably prefer to practice on your own terms.
