HERE'S WHY...
An age old debate regarding fitness is which should come first, cardio or strength training! For most of my training life, I always did cardio first so I could warm up my body, generate a lather, as it were, to go all out for my strength training regimen. However, the science suggests I had it backwards! Here's why...

Muscle fiber is ONLY fueled or "powered" by glycogen. Glycogen is the stored version of sugar in muscle tissue. In the blood stream, sugar is known as glucose. It is then converted to glycogen inside the liver and stored in the liver and muscle tissue. So, according to science, here's what transpires:

When we do cardio first (and, heavily depending on the intensity) the body can burn through circulating glucose in the bloodstream. If/when available glucose has been depleted, the body pulls the next energy source, glycogen, out of muscle tissue. Eventually, when both available glucose and glycogen have been depleted, the body can tap into bodyfat as its next fuel substrate. Thus, if this does manifest, then when cardio is complete and strength training ensues, effort will be compromised because as previously mentioned, muscle fibers are only powered by stored glycogen. This can lead to premature fatigue of the engaged muscle(s).

Therefore, according to research, if strength training/muscle building is a primary focus, hit a short 5-10 minute low intensity warm up to increase blood flow, then hit the weights!!! The added benefit is that doing weights first will deplete muscle glycogen, so, consequently when you do begin your cardio workout, the body will tap into fat stores more rapidly for energy!!!

Back problems? Sometimes simple breathing techniques can offer a solution. As we age, the discs in our backs begin to dry out. This, of course, can lead to stiffness and/or pressure upon nerves leading to excruciating pain. Deep breathing techniques open out the vertebral discs allowing for an increased flow of fluid to enter the region. This synovial fluid nourishes the disc and assists with maintaining the distance between each one, thus, reducing friction and pain!
