Take it from the creator of Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction-- Mindfulness isn't only about being "zen" or calm all the time. This quote gets to the heart of what else it can lead us to- friendship with ourselves and our experience. Mindfulness practices can help us by developing the muscles of observation and non-judgment: simply meeting ourselves right in this moment. And who doesn't want more of that?! β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €

"How do I heal from what's hurt me?" is the million dollar question! Although there's no perfect formula or linear plan for each person's healing, this wisdom from the 12 Steps is so helpful. The posture that promotes healing is to be honest, open-minded, and willing. These aren't tasks to accomplish but ways to show up in your healing journey. β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €
*Honest about yourself, your experience, your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors.β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €
*Open-minded to what new ways of operating or possible solutions there are.β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €
*Willing to see, hear, accept, or act in new or different ways. β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €
How can you embody this posture this week, and how might that lead you to growth or healing? β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €

And, no, we aren't saying you're masochistic.β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €
β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €
When we come to realize an unhealthy behavior or pattern is harmful to us or others and we aren't able to find our way out of the "bad habit," there's often an UNconscious part of us that is experiencing some kind of secondary pay-off. While there may be obvious negative consequences that seem significant enough for is to make a change, these secondary gains can keep our unconscious driving us back for more. β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €
β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €
For example:β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €
Waiting until it’s too late to complete a project or mismanaging your finances & coming up short on necessity bills. If others step in to rescue you, or even experiencing extra attention, can be something that a part of your emotional system may be missing & that behavior is a known pathway to getting it. These are often young or vulnerable parts of ourselves that didn't get these needs met at the time & may not know how to access other methods to do so in ways that are not also harmful. β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €
So, first - be gentle!β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €
And, then see if you can consciously acknowledge these needs & find alternative ways to seek them out more intentionally. πŸ™πŸ» This should help curb those other pesky impulses.β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €

And breathe again, in and out. This time of year can get so busy and hectic. Sometimes all we need is a few 30 second breaks throughout the day to take in some fresh air. Try pausing and taking 3 deep breaths between tasks, between events, even between emails. Slowing down for less than a minute can help us reset and be in the present moment.β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €

We often trick ourselves into believing that we're super-independent beings. I love the reminder that science offers us here, that we are so inherently communal. β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €
If you're not sure why you're feeling something, it could be coming from the collective around you. And, vice versa, we impact others. This can also help be more intentional about our circle! β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €

This can be a tough one for us to believe in. Important note that is the key ingredient πŸ”‘ to this being a Truth that has persisted to win out in my life (Tara; I feel fairly certain Hannah agrees on this too πŸ˜‰) -- is the "capital G."🌟 β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €
This means things that support our ultimate Good as individuals will inevitably support the ultimate Good of others.β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €
This is NOT giving us permission to leave our friends or colleagues out on a limb when we already committed to helping with something because we over-did it with socializing this weekend & have now worn ourselves out. In turn, this gives us permission to say "no" to the right amount of those invites that allows us to show up where it matters most...and trust if it helps us stay healthy in the broader sense that it also keeps ALL of our relationships healthy & all that good energy flows out, instead of the yucky energy of obligation, fear, resentment, shame, exhaustion, insecurity, etc.β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €
It requires asking yourself what the Greater Good is in your life and what supports it...and watching as nature takes that clean water to nourish the environment in & around you over time. It's one of those things! 🀩😬😏 β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €

So many of us are craving connection and support now more than ever. Although in Pearls of Recovery we work through many other elements of emotional well-being, this reflection from a former client is the foundation of what we hope to offer each member of our groups. β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €

The holidays and the end of another year can make our needs more clear. As you think about what would offer you support in the new year, please reach out to us if Pearls of Recovery can be part of that. Our next group begins in January, and we're currently taking sign ups. β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €

Here comes Santa Claus...and everything else the holidays may bring! Here's a helpful skill borrowed from DBT therapy--Cope Ahead. If you know that a specific event or dynamic will be difficult this holiday season, plan for the challenge. Make a list of ways to cope with the situation directly and how to take care of yourself before and after. And maybe most importantly, envision yourself using your plan and coping well. That way you can go into the holidays feeling empowered with a plan of action for dealing with difficulty and taking care of yourself too! β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €
