This week on Rockett Labs: Managing Your Athlete, we’re joined by CrossFit affiliate owner and co-host of , Matt Souza (). We discuss a fascinating topic: ligamentous laxity. Ever heard of it? 🤔

🩺 Dr. Rockett’s Insight: Ligamentous laxity, or being 'double-jointed,' means having looser ligaments, which can increase flexibility but also the risk of joint injuries. It’s crucial for athletes with this condition to focus on strengthening exercises to support their joints and prevent injuries.

Whether you’re coaching or training with this condition, understanding how to manage it can significantly enhance athletic performance and prevent downtime due to injuries.

Welcome back to ""Rockett Science: Anatomy 101"" with me, Dr. Sean Rockett! 🩺

In today’s episode, we’re tackling the treatment options for a SLAP tear, a common shoulder injury that can really disrupt your daily activities and fitness routines.

Initial Treatment Approach:
The first line of defense against a SLAP tear is always conservative treatment. This means:

Taking it easy: Avoid activities that aggravate the shoulder.
Rest: Give your shoulder the downtime it needs to begin the healing process.
Modify your activities: Adjust your workout and daily routines to reduce stress on your shoulder.
Physical Therapy: Engaging in targeted exercises to strengthen the shoulder and improve flexibility can be immensely helpful.

However, if you've been following all these measures for 4-6 months and still experience significant discomfort—enough to disturb your sleep and daily functioning—then it might be time to consider a more definitive solution.

Surgical Option - Biceps Tenodesis:
If conservative treatments don’t bring the relief you need, biceps tenodenesis is a surgical option to consider. This procedure involves reattaching the biceps tendon to a new location, which can alleviate pain and improve the function of your shoulder.

Remember, the goal is to return you to your normal activities with minimal discomfort. If you’re facing ongoing shoulder issues, don’t hesitate to seek a detailed evaluation and discuss whether surgery might be the right path for you.

This week on Rockett Science: Managing Your Athlete, we address a common coaching challenge brought up by Joe—how to effectively support athletes with limited range of motion in their shoulder joints.

🔍 Joe's Question: "In your opinion, what is the most important thing a coach can do to support an athlete with restricted shoulder mobility?"

🩺 Dr. Rockett’s Response: "The first step is to ensure the athlete has a proper diagnosis. Understanding the underlying cause is crucial. For athletes, particularly those with arthritis who cannot raise their arm overhead, modifying exercises is essential. Continuously work on flexibility but adjust the intensity and range of motion to accommodate their capabilities without exacerbating the issue."

🏋️‍♂️ Coaching Tips: Modification doesn't mean limitation. It's about adapting techniques to meet athletes where they are while still pushing them towards their fitness goals safely and effectively.

🔍 Ben's Concern: Arthritis is a frequent issue among athletes at the gym. He asks, "Does squatting below parallel or continuing to squat through pain exacerbate knee damage? Additionally, are there procedures that can help people return to being pain-free?"

🩺 Dr. Rockett’s Insight: "If you are experiencing pain while squatting below parallel, consider taking a break from squatting. A good option is to modify your approach, such as squatting to a box, which can help manage pain and prevent further injury."

Today on Rockett Science: Office Hours, we're diving into a hot topic in the fitness community: Do butterfly pull-ups cause injury?

🔍 Question of the Day: ""Do butterfly pull-ups cause injury?""

🩺 Dr. Rockett’s Insight: Butterfly pull-ups, when performed correctly by someone who is well-prepared physically, do not necessarily lead to injury. If you're strong enough, proficient in the technique, and not experiencing pain during the exercise, then it's likely safe to continue. However, it's crucial to build up the necessary strength and technique gradually to avoid stress on the shoulders and other parts of the body.

🗨️ What are your thoughts on butterfly pull-ups? Have they been a part of your workout routine? Share your experiences and any tips you have for performing them safely!
